  • I don't even like scooters BlueQuinn but this is seriously lush!

I agree it looks in great condition. What year is that model? I do like the look of Vespa's but they are more expensive than Zip's and I am on a budget ATM.

    Cheers,

It's a 1983 Vespa 125 Primavera ET3. It used to look like this:

I used it hard for years, but after one breakdown too many I bought a Honda and since then it had spent the last 6 or 7 years sat outside unridden and unloved.
It's been back to bare metal, had all the bodywork straightened and repaired, been given the whole retro-modern treatment, with 12v electrics, digital speedo, LED rear lights modern suspension, a very souped up engine and exhaust, finished off with 60's style badges and light fittings. It cost a grand at first but I've easily sunk 5 or 6 Gs into it over the years.

  • Just sheared two rocker cover bolts into the head. After I put the bike back together yesterday I used a torque wrench to secure the rocker cover, turns out those clicks weren't the wrench, and indeed were the bolts shearing. Took the bike out for a blast today and it was perfect, but got back and saw quite a bit of oil pissing out behind the front wheel. Lucky in some respects, as my back tyre was being covered in oil the whole journey. What a bastard, hope I can get this sorted without getting a new head or dropping the engine. Shit.

  • passed my theory test today after letting it lapse - now to book module 1 on a 600cc - yee ha!

  • You should be able to remove the bolts either with vice grips if there is something to grip to, or easy-outs if there isn't.

Replace all the bolts with new, to be on the safe side.

Double-check the torque settings, and your wrench to make sure you didn't miss a decimal point, or set the wrong units.

  • Congrats Eightball. I passed my car one yesterday. Practical test in late may.

  • cheers, and congrats to you too! nice Primmy

After all the work I've done it's left a bitter taste, so learning towards just giving to the local shop. I think after a nights sleep and a clearer head I may consider trying it myself. In terms of extracting the bolt I get the impression it's not too far in to cause a problem, just getting access for a drill is going to be the deal (and bank) breaker. Thanks for your advice.

Well done, keep us updated how you get on with the lessons/test.

If there is enough bolt protruding to grip.

If not small drill, then some easy outs, Need to be lent some? ;)

  • Unfortunately there's not enough to grip, the head casing is higher than the bolt by roughly 10mm. Thanks for the offer of the easy outs, but should be able to borrow these from the local shop if I ask nicely. I'm thinking if access is a problem, a right angle drill attachment may work.

  • As everyone likes pictures, here's the most recent of the NSR...

  • ^ all of a sudden building a road bike looks amazingly simple!

got my Lambretta MOT tomorrow - been off road for a good while and re-built a few weeks back - hope they're sympathetic (and don't question it sounding quite beefy for a '125'......ahem......)

  • I've a friend with a 180cc engine in his Lambretta and always wondered what happens with an MOT. I've removed my rear number plate light and that's going to be stressful enough when they scrutinize it on MOT day.

So, I tried to dill one of my sheared bolts out which seemed to go ok, until I taped it with an easy out to extract it, and with that tap it managed to go through my napkins into the head and down underneath the upper chain guide. Now at this point I think you can imagine the mental state I'm in, not a good one. After about 6 hrs of jiggling a brake cable down there it finally became dislodged and managed to get it from the crank casing on the bottom right.

So now, one's still stuck, which is an improvement on my situation about 24hrs ago so am claiming the little victory. On Tuesday the bike's booked in at the local garage so hopefully they can remove the other one.

  • Lambretta passed MOT and a lovely day for a ride

  • Just seized a piston. First ride in more than a year and then I have to leave it in the middle of nowhere!
    So proper gutted.

  • Is it in a safe location? That's a shame, but guess it's better now that it's getting ridden rather than standing for extended periods. Let me guess is was running great until it seized? Always the way.

  • I seized a Vespa T5 at 60 mph on a dual carriageway overtaking a lorry - fucking scariest thing that has ever happened to me - locked the back wheel solid......lucky the lorry driver saw me and slowed right down

caused by fully synth not mixing with mineral oil that was in there from previous buyer

  • It's been towed away now and sits at my uncle's.
It didn't lock up solid. when pushing the bike it would turn over a bit and then the clutch would slip.

interesting with the synth oil. I just filled fully synth on and don't remember what was in before. might be the culprit right there.

  • turns out it wasn't the piston after all. rather one of the charging coils nocked it self off and jammed the flywheel.

  • MarkyBoy, BlueQuinn, Vanuden, instead of arguing on the Thatcher thread (hehe), please come back over here, and let's discuss that bloody ride to France. I'd like to give a firm answer to my friend in France with regards to who will attend.

The (gentle and not serious) accusation above is actually not fair to BlueQuinn, who has been talking scooters here recently (nice machine, btw!). He is also the only one who, like me, already has his ticket.

Anyway, the trip is planned as below (so you don't have to dig the thread to find the dates):
-We are leaving Portsmouth on Thursday the 23rd May at 23:00 (arrival the next day in Le Havre)
-We are coming back Sunday the 26th May, Ferry leaves le Havre at 17:00, arrival in the evening in Portsmouth.

This is in 4-5 weeks now so I think we should really organising ourselves (hotels, meeting point with the french group, etc...).

For the 25th time, I'll start a list below, please quote it, confirming your attendance or not, and if you want to come, please book your ticket asap so we are all on the same boat and prices don't go mad.

    -veLLo (coming, ticket bought)
    -BlueQuinn (coming, ticket bought)
    -MarkyBoy (please confirm)
-Vanuden (I vaguely remenber that you are concerned about your bike being strapped on the ferry after all the good work you've done on it, last time you said you were out, but I wanted to double check)
    -CoppiThat (please confirm)
-Kuba (please confirm, last time we discussed this, you said you had to check whether the date conflicted with some track event...)
    -...
-Please join us and put your name down!

Do it, or at least if you don't or can't make it, please confirm so...

    Szia

  • Loic, sorry, I've been slow on this. BUT, I have booked the time off so am definitely coming, and will book the ticket at the weekend. Work has been crazy, so I'm looking forward to it.

Gerald, I'm expecting you to be there too.

  • me scootay the other day after MOT and quick ride along coast road

I put the Thatcher thread on ignore pretty soon after I realised that it was making me act like a total twat. :-)
