I hate to admit it, but continental cycling definitely has the edge. a) weather b) road quality c) cycle paths d) often stunning scenery e) far fewer cars (outside the cities). On a good day we get two of those things here, but rarely 3 or 4. I was in Duesseldorf and Berlin for a year each, although rarely cycled there - 1 long trip down the Rhine was about it - but the commitment to cycle paths really impressed me. Cycle most Summers in France (near Chambery) and am always slightly sad to come home.
