Agree - there are always going to be great traders who you always trust. I'd use a bank transfer if that was the case.
Unless I'm missing something, using PayPal gift means
a) the buyer pays PayPal's fees, and
b) loses all rights to dispute resolution
If the seller is going to require you to pay PayPal's fees, just do a normal payment, and pay their fee. At least then you aren't paying PayPal's fees for nothing.
