  • Not to mention hybrid make excellent touring bike as the only thing you need to do is put rack and mudguard on if it doesn't come with it, a £300 Specialized Sirrus is more than enough to go touring.

I decided not to get a custom touring bike, if I were to go, I'd just buy a hybrid, do it up a bit and go out rather than spending thousands and some time waiting for a Roberts Roughstuff that would be amazing but not entirely Necessary.

The best tour are the spur of the moment one (IMHO of course).

  • ^ Fully agree with all the above.
If I had a big tour to do I reckon I'd be sticking drops on a hybrid too.

  • I've always assumed touring bikes were for bedwetters, CTC members and retired gentlefolk

    Ha!

Reminds me of a post on CTC, bemoaning the English need to get over obsessed with *having *to have expensive dedicated touring bikes when the Continent is full of North European families trundling along on various BSOs.

  • Thanks chaps, I posted this while drunk last night but have woken up realising it rings true (in vino veritas and that).
This is about where I am at the moment:

Don Brooks, Maxi Sports and wife's Raleigh are staying - the rest is probably going.
That Bill Nickson is built up as a CX bike here

I'm just waiting for some gear cables, then I'll decide what I'm doing with it.

With regards to the 'longer distances, I think' you're totally right. My tourer has sat there for 2 years waiting for when I can convince some others to come on a tour with me, but it's never happened. I'm a teacher so have 6/7 weeks off for summer but bike packing might indeed be the way forward.

So up for sale or coming up for sale very soon:
Raleigh Randonneur, 600 running gear, LX/XT wheels (56cm)
    Graham Weigh 853 track F & F (54cm)
    Graham Weigh 853 road F & F (52cm)
Bob Jackson 700C lo pro - bent, and with a stuck seatpost
Bill Nickson 531c CX - possibly full bike
'Herne Hill' road/fixie conversion frame 56cm

    And for free:
    Peugeot Carbolite frame and forks
    Full chinese beater bike

Fuck me, I can almost see why my wife says I have too many...

  • Selling bits individually has been almost enjoyable for me recently.
No eBay, just Craigslist. This means local cash sales only - I guess you could do the same with Gumtree.
It's practically enabled me to entirely fund the build of a new frame (Pompino) whilst hanging onto a rare-ish 1999 MTB frameset I've ridden from new.
To me, the frameset is much more special than any of the components | had on it, so I want to keep it in the hope I might build it back up one day.
Plus, I made sure it could be kept in the house in a way that wouldn't displease the missus...

I have tried selling parts individually in the past but it just takes forever. I have too many random parts hanging about (brake routing rollers, pump clips, cable guides etc) that are a pain to sell but just too nice to give away for free.

  • Pick the bike that's the most fun to ride.

    Put bigger cassette and tyres.

    Go touring.

Hopefully it's going to be this CX bike - my gear cables just got pushed through my door, so I'm going to go and find out!

  • like it Edward

  • Almost done, gonna change bars to some compact drops and install fenders + make front rack.

  • Just finished my run around town commuter bike. As mentioned before it is an old faggin frame with a 126,5mm rear end ... I forced it up to 130mm to get my old cannondale wheelset in there. The group is a mix of old really old and kind a new shimano parts. Shifters are shimano 600 the group is Ultegra 6500 with a 5500 bb ita and a sora rear derailleur which was cheap as chips in comparison to rocked 6500 ones at flea bay. Someday it might get a flite but right now I am happy with the way it rides.

  • one of my first steel steeds was one of those, though not as good nick

  • Good nick would be exaggerated. You can see the marks in the laquer even on this shitty phone pic. In reality it could go as a nearly rat bike. But it was the bike which got me hooked again. Bought it 3 years ago and massacred it into a conversion. At that time I knew nothing about the sport and it was pure luck that the frame size was right o.0 I truly am glad that I didn't swung the hacksaw at it. It is surprisingly heavy though ...

  • your pic does it too much justice then ) my one was worn and cost 25 euros in a flea market with 600 arabesque

  • 75,- Euros at a local bike shop with full shimano 600 on it. Seems to be fully chromed though. I learned to wrench away on a bike without worrying to break anything expensive which was quite a nice bonus.

  • nice

  • Looks really well done, like that

  • This came on a bike I bought recently, gonna box it up and keep it safe I reckon.
I'm struggling to find a price for a full record pista groupset (there are wheels as well).
It's in remarkably good condition considering its age.

  • Nice looking Zeus

it is. except it's not a zeus.

    Didn't know Supra made lugs..

I suspect it might have been made by Zeus for someone else

  • Hard to find I've tried looking before, not impossible

  • you're getting there!

  • Slowly but surely... =)

  • Oh, oh my.

  • The huge lack of weight must've helped you soar like a bird compared to the old porky Dolan.

Frame isn't that light, but noticed the weight of the wheels straight away, barely any effort to slow down, just did about 5 miles without needing to skid, love it!

  • Slowly but surely... =)

Whats the full build weight of this?

  • What make of frame is that?
