For Sale: Heartache for sale

  • There are reasons why I must put this stunning 60cm ctc Vittorio Strada bike up for sale for a mere £295, but it is still most painful.

Frame bought last year on this forum from Peter V, well-known here as a supplier of high quality Dutch-built steel, which is what this is.

Vittorio frames were (and are) all custom builds by Jan Groot of Alkemaar – the name of the original customer is stamped on the bottom bracket shell. Dropouts are 100/126 spacing, fittings for braze-on gear levers and front mech, and an unusual inset groove on the top tube for the rear brake cable. Original paintwork in excellent condition for a 20 year old frame, with a patch of light rust on one chainstay the only bad mark. Columbus tubing according to the generic Columbus sticker, probably SLX judging by the relative lightness.

The build is Italian and Japanese, but all working together well. There are no stuck posts or stems, no dents or dings, and it is a joy to ride, just the right lightness-stiffness-bendiness blend. The Dutch are the world’s experts at building larger frames, and this is proof.

    New Stronglight headset.

Campag Chorus hubs on Campag Omega medium profile rims. Dead true, low miles, lovely bulletproof things. Vittoria Rubino tyres, decent condition.

    Sachs 7 speed freewheel block.

    Shimano Ultegra rear mech.

    Shimano Ultegra braze-on front mech.

    Shimano 600 friction levers.

    Shimano Ultegra brakes.

Ofmega drilled road double crankset, very low miles.

Ofmega cup and cone bottom bracket, new when I fitted it less than 100 miles ago, and so smooth.

MKS Sylvan track pedals with leather-bound clips and leather straps.

Dawes Randonneur bars 44cm, the most comfortable bars in the world in my opinion, and a 3ttt 120mm stem missing its bolt cover.

    Weinmann drilled levers, new cables.

Basic but very light ‘litestik’ 27mm alloy seatpost, cut down somewhat by me to make it even lighter.

Lycett leather saddle, like a Brooks B17 but nicer. Vintage, recently recovered with new leather.

Dibs followed by PM please. Paypal only.

    But could bring to town.

  • Still for sale, still a beautiful classic made by a master builder, still a bargain.

  • Bump for a beauty that is way too big for me :(

  • And yes, still for sale. Now with rather tasty Panaracer gumwall tyres.
