The title's usually turquoise, but is currently black as a mark of respect for the fatality yesterday http://www.lfgss.com/thread104501.html

the title is only black when there's been a rider fatality. thankfully not very often in 2013. in 2012 it almost seemed to be the normal state of affairs :(

This suggestion would be comical if it wasn't related to such a grave occurrence

Also, the simpler the better with forums, as a lot of people browse at work when they should be putting their TPS reports together

This is an unfortunate choice of words:
(instead of funeral-black),
As stated above, the logo changes to black when a cyclist is killed on London roads and remains as such for 7 days.

Oh Howard....

apologies for inadvertent (but foolish) insensitivity, but i thought at the time that the logo thing was simply a stark design choice (similar to this sort of thing);
i guess if the black-lettering linked to the thread detailing the fatality, this might help avoid instances of irregular forum users (such as myself) being avoidably tactless,

This is quite a good idea.

It's a terrible idea.

I thought it stayed black for a week.

It stays black for 2-5 days, mostly depending on when I remember to turn it blue again. I aim for 3 days though.
And I won't change the link in the logo when it is black because:
1) That would make it a modal interface which is a UX nightmare
2) Everyone in the world understand that if you click on a logo you go home
3) Unfortunately there are sometimes more than one death at the same time (May-June) and where would it link?
It's fraught with issues, and yet as a "bat signal" of sorts to tell people to look in the Riders Down forum it works pretty damn well.

Do you mean a lightbox/overlay feature? If so, I agree.
Might I suggest adding an asterisk or a dagger '†' (which is a typographic symbol to signify both a footnote and a death) alongside the black logo. And when clicking it you could have a popover to show the footnote and any links you need to add.
(You can easily implement a popover using twitter bootstrap - http://twitter.github.io/bootstrap/javascript.html#popovers)

No, I mean modal as in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mode_(computer_interface)
As in:
In user interface design, a mode is ... machine interface, in which the same user input will produce perceived different results than it would in other settings.
Modal dialogues in browsers are a different thing.
could i suggest perhaps a little more colourful/pictorial 'LFGSS' title look (instead of funeral-black),
..and... a new '13 edition LFGSS forum cap?
