    That is the problem with your comment. You jumped to a sweeping generalisation about a whole segment of society based on nothing but their sex, and then need to "know who she was" to be OK about it. If anything, knowing "who she was" only serves to justify the sweeping generalisation as then you can continue to just say "I wouldn't let most girls touch my bike", and further perpetuate the sexist views.

    The vociferous backlash is a good thing, because it was a very sexist and dumb comment. That two of the forums three biggest trolls found is distasteful enough to speak out shows how offensive the comment is.

    Apologising is cool and would be accepted by all if you didn't feel the need to qualify the apology with a "genuinely didn't know who she was" which only implies that you believe that the generalisation stands.
