How does the bonding hold up on these over the years? Is it safe to ride, or more of a museum piece? I only ask because it's pretty... and my size...

Despite various blatherers moaning in other threads about these frames they are usually ok...it all depends on what sort of life they have have had...the longer the tubes...ie this big...will feel a little flexy...and generally Alans are betterer...tho Vitus are usually fine...I had one that was earlier than this and bigger and it was fine...for the money you are paying you're getting a sweeheet frame for very little cash...If it debonds whilst you own it...ask on here for me and I'll mend it for you...I've done a few now and its not too hard...
Spend the money...you'll lurve it. -

Can't speak for vitus', but I've owned a couple of bonded cadex's (alu and carbon/alu) and ridden them hard/treated them like crap. No problems.
I don't think unbonding is really an issue. It just sounds scary and plausible so people worry about it. I'd worry more about a modern alu frame cracking than a frame that has survived 20 years suddenly unbonding.
Its my size, too, but you should get it. Check out erikjonssons..

I'd love this, but I don't think I could ever enjoy riding it because of The Fear.

Thats a **Total ** copout...As he said...I'd be a damned sight more worried riding some modern crap made out of glorified tinfoil than something that wasn't made in taiwan (no disrespect to the tai bike industry)
tho this thing was hand built by somene that wasn't being paid peanuts and wasn't being paid piece work...
It was built with love, pride and consideration...As he also said...it's only frames that have been ridden within an inch of their life that ever had problems...
If you hadn't just got your ears wet you would know that an Irish fellow won the tour and the giro and loads of other shite on one of these...
The fear...is what stops you putting a good time in. -

I was riding this frame for a while, and had an alan just before it in the same size. Between the two, the alan felt much flexier and at 78 kilos, I was very happy with this frame. Anyway, it's sold now and I'm certain the new owner won't regret it. I also had a Sakae bonded aluminium frame for a while - and still prefer the vitus.
Vitus 979 frameset. Decent condition - some marks and small scratches but nothing major. blue-grey colour. Sold with 105 headset and Mavic 116mm BB.
Seat tube - 61.5cm centre-top
top tube - 57cm centre-centre
rear - 126mm
