I've found riding fixed with spds is totally fine, unless you want to run brakeless all the time/generally dick around. Maybe it's my massive legs (or terrible skidding technique who knows) but when I'm really pulling up my leading leg can/often does pop out, resulting in some sketchy one-footedness. Feels good to be so secure when pedaling though, and i find it easier to trackstand clipped in. That said, i'm toying with getting some flats/straps, having snapped a pair of spds in half not too long ago.
