  • ^ Thanks! Certainly feel like a winner when I get home every night!

^^ There was a time - albeit some time ago now - when everyone had no choice but to ride fixed!

  • There was a time , before tattoos , beards and skinny jeans when only men over 50 rode fixed on the road

Mind you, they had guards, sat on Brookes and had a black saddle bag...

This is one of those occasions when I can say "Oi, I resemble that remark" when I really don't mean "Oi, I resent that remark". Actually, the carradice and brooks have been retired for the time being, and I'm only in my late 40s.

  • You win!

Humm, not if Clubman is in the house...

  • When-I-started-riding-properly-(ie-fixed-for-training-on-saturday-afternoons)-at-17-the-old-guy-we-used-to-tag-along-with-was---71...

    still-never-to-old.

  • 52 48 16

  • 55 44 14 / 46 16 for commute. Get fixed and rock on!

    hey, that's me!

  • 48 47 18

been riding fixed on the road since i was 16 rode a 49x14 then.. i converted my old BSA and added a 14 cog because thats what the nearest bike shop had, then took the rest of the stuff off the bike. Then hamerited it black without taking of masking anything off.

  • IM 43 always watchin the guys on youtube ,messenger bikes look awesome and love the alley cat races.not sure what size gearing to start on though

  • Medium.

  • Just built my second single speed at 48. 48 16

    go for it!

  • post you bikes over 40

  • Thinking of getting back into fixed gear riding after getting rid this year. I thought it had caused my plantar fasciitis...it didn't (well, I'm pretty sure).

So what sort of age can people ride fixed gear in hills or on audax's?

If your over forty and suffered from fixed gear related aches and pains let me know...cheers.

I am 65 this year and just returned from a 500 mile return fixed wheel cycle ride to visit family! So age is no barrier. Just ride and enjoyed.

  • Yep I can see my N+1 being ordered by the end of summer. Canary yellow Ellis Briggs Pista.

  • Not yet brave enough to try fixed. 650c wheels. Almost two years now.

50 46 21 (<-- latest freewheel. My knees are happy).

  • 55 48 19

My obesity rather than my age hinders me.

  • The more you put it off, the harder it look.

Best to try and put it on without thinking and give it a good go for the next two weeks, you have nothing to lose after all.

  • euph, Ed?

  • Doubt it but it made me chuckle.

  • 43 42 16. I'm new here and just bought my first fixie (nothing exotic, a used Charge Plug Freestyler from eBay) after selling my Evil Sovereign SS MTB recently. I've ridden SS off road for a while but this is my first foray into fixed on road. It's different but not as difficult as I imagined and so far I'm enjoying it but I am blessed with quiet country roads to practice on.

  • 40 been riding fixed for ages, I can't see me every getting rid of it.

  • Don't really think age had much effect on riding fixed gear, as long as the bike is set up correctly. But if the bike set-up is wrong, fixed gear will magnify any problems. So saddle height, top tube length etc are more important, in my opinion.

I'm 46 and was still racing on fixed until two years ago, too busy to train hard at the moment. But I was still going under 21 minutes for ten miles, which is pretty quick.

Get the bike set-up right and you'll be ok. And don't over estimate your strength, initially. Keep the gear low until you've adjusted back to fixed.

  • Well I'm one step closer....riding a 2 speed Brompton on 50 and 75 inches. My strength is returning slowly.

When I do return to fixed riding, I'll probably try one of those S3X hubs. I live at the top of a huge hill and its nice to have the 50" for days like yesterday and today......gusts of 65 mph! Especially at the end of long rides.
