Anyone want their head badges restored?

Posted on
  • I spent some time the other day restoring the badge from an old steel Cinelli stem. I think it came out rather well, and I found it quite rewarding, so I thought I'd ask if there was anyone out there who would like a similar service?
I started by polishing the brass, and then filled in the areas of damaged enamel with a mixture of oil paint and gloss medium (so I could colour-match the existing enamel accurately, and still get a gloss finish). I guess I could also lacquer it when it's dry to make it more hard-wearing?

I didn't take any before photos (I was just pottering really), but it was in a fairly sorry state to begin with, with the brass almost black and paint chips everywhere... Now it looks much better:

It took about an hour and half to do this stem badge, so I reckon I could do a head badge for about £15 - £30, depending on how bad the condition is. Would that be useful to anyone?

  • Lacquer would be very good idea if only to stop the brass from oxydising

  • i would like to avail myself of this service for an old claud butler that just needs paint

only, the headbadge is riveted to the frame currently

  • the seat tube has the right sticker for colour matching

  • You have hit the nail on the head, so to speak. Most head badges were not made to be removed. But you could remove the fork then carefully drill out the rivets.

  • Hi Ben, I could probably do it whilst it's on the frame without too much hassle. Send us a PM and bring it over if you like.

Think I saw you at the HH jumble this morning, btw?

  • How resistant to fading is the mix of oil and gloss paint. I don't suppose the potential lack of hardness of the finish will matter too much as the head badge shouldn't get to much wear.

  • It should be very good at fade restistance. The mix isn't with oil paint and gloss paint, it's with oil paint and gloss medium, which is an traditional mix of oils and varnishes that artists have been using for years.

  • here is Gaz's lovely work. It didn't take this long i just forgot to post the pic till now.

  • Nice job!

  • Thanks Ben!
I am still offering this kind of thing, btw.

headbadges, cut-out lugs, etc etc. PM if interested.

  • If you need to use a guide for the colours, we have a directory here:

  • Great work Gaz ..

  • still doing this? just PM'ed you

  • yup still doing this... although the way I do it is best suited to opaque colours rather than the transparent, glassy-looking ones on some enamel badges.
