I'm 80 next year. Still riding fixed. Started in 1946. Rode 64 during the winter and have just geared up to 68. If we get a summer this year I might go up to 72 but I doubt I will go any higher,

Ask someone old, like jonny or villa-ru.
Andy, you massive cunt.
(Though to be fair I do have to consciously work out how old I am these days.)
49 x 19 - spin to win. -

Started riding fixed at 45 (Learnt to skid at 48 and track-stand like a boss at 49) and am now 52. Started 48/17 and now ride 48/19. It just gets easier and more fun
3 years to learn to skid?
I bet you were gutted when you eventually mastered it and discovered the pure uselessness of fixie-skidding.

Not at all.
Fun isn't useless -

Ride until your balance goes. Gear down as your average speed starts to drop.
Anyone want to buy a carbon Dolan track bike? Currently fitted with 32" gear.

I am 47 and going strong! I hope...

I had to give up fixed gear at the age of 39 as my body is pretty much falling apart now.
Hope that helps -
• #36
46 and just starting, may not last as long as I would like, though.

49 x 19 - spin to win.Wow, as old as Villa-Ru?
And I thought the hills were looking a bit jaded.
No, fixeh skidderz around town is a young mans game and carries serious health risks for any male over 25.
And don't get me started on Laydees without a derailleur.
My name?

43 and loving it. Live the 'wrong' side of Crystal Palace/Forest Hill/Dulwich Hills. Grit ya teeth, and get up those hills :)
Still can't track stand though. Just have no balance LOL

41, 49x20 spin to win. Mashing fixed is
for idiots. It's all about souplesse. -
• #46
I'm 63, 48x17, live top of Crouch Hill - so front brake required!
-

45 and started when I was 35. One of those depressing where did that 10 years go realisations...
-
• #48
49 and 46/16, but I'm currently being unadverturous on singlespeed.
On the other hand, since ditching the gears I actually find my knees stronger, especially when running. -
• #49
There was a time , before tattoos , beards and skinny jeans when only men over 50 rode fixed on the road
Mind you, they had guards, sat on Brookes and had a black saddle bag...

You win!
I'm confident that riding fixed has been kinder on my knees than riding geared. I used to punish my knees by riding too high a gear on my commute but that all changed at the age of about 30 when I ditched gears for the commute and (because I lived on the top of Forest Hill) developed a love of a fairly low gear, mostly 67 to 70 inches or so.
Sixteen years later my knees are still happy. I still use gears for some rides, and have to resist the temptation to whack the bike into 53x11 just because it's there.
