What happened? Was it the whisky??

I don't really have a good reply to that. It's a lovely frame, just not what i had in mind for a long term every day bike, so I need to sell it before I get sentimental.

its at least 531, its obviously something decent, but sadly no way to know for sure.

On the contrary, there is, happily, a way to know for sure. Just ask Dave Yates. Well, email them the frame number, it's actually his wife who would reply. I did the same about a Joe Waugh road frame I had, they were able to tell me mine was 853, and the year it was made, from their records.

PS I bet you it's 853.

Fair enough, you're selling why bother researching it. It's a bargain whatever the tubes. I was just pointing out that you can find out.

A few years a ago i had a JW frame and contacted M Steel [as it was made a few back before DY set up his business in Lincolnshire] to find out what tubing my frame was made from and was told there was a flood in the factory a few years before. As a consequence, they could not tell me what tubing my frame was built with and that will go for this frame too.
The key factor is the seatpost diameter if it 27.2mm then it will most definitely 531DB/531c or above and i doubt JW frames were ever built with anything less.
A lovely frame by the way and i like JW frames and would be my size too.....price is fair but a tad high for me.

Ah, interesting Marxist. I contacted DY about a road one I had, built in 98, and they were able to tell me. Maybe yours was older, from before this flood, and mine wasn't.

This was a couple of years back and to be honest, i never thought of contacting DY because JW frames were built at M Steel in Newcastle. However i had another JW frame about 10 years ago before the flood and M Steel were able to tell me what tubing the frame was made from.
JW frames were always made from good stuff ie 531DB/531c or above and am certain this one is no exception.

Sold.
£215 includes postage.
Not owned it long at all, haven't even built it up, 53cm seat tube, ctt, 54cm top top, ctc.
Likely to be reynolds 531 tubing, 27.2 seat post, ridden by Joe Waugh him self in the passed so it has some history. 28c rear clearance, clearance on the fork is tight, 20c will fit fine but fitting a 23c may require a file or wider rim, only a few small minor paint chips as a frame of its age, still in great shape, no rust or anything.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Joe.
