The latter. I only ride perfectly smooth and silent chains; the average lifetime is 1hour.
I carry 3 chains on any given commute, pausing after an hour's use, chucking the chain and replacing with a new one. I get through an average of 1.2 a journey.
Still cheaper than the train ...
