Wanted: Help to fit a crown race

dont want to spend out on tools!

Block of wood and a mallet....tappy, tappy, tap tap....... Done

if you live near clapham apex cycles banged mine on for free in about 2 minutes

I use the back of my pedal spanner. works fine, just make sure you dont hit it too hard and bend it

yeah decent cycle shops will do it there and then for either nothing or less than a fiver

Yeah. Cheap and quick at your LBS.

They just sleeve a pole over the steerer and give it a tap.

anybody in wimbledon area able to fit a fork crown race for me?

Its easy ,just clean any paint off fork tube down to fork where crown rests, then place crown over fork tube,push down until it wont go any further by hand then tap each side as you go but not on smooth bearing surface but on the flat rim ,use hammer and flat edge, pedal spanners good place spanner against fork tube and edge of spanner on race crown rim tap tap tap usually its a case of cleaning area of paint hope this helps ,obviously you should use special tools but ive done this way for years then crown race should sit on top of forkcrown evenly

i've tapped / bashed on crown races on steel forks before - this is a mint full carbon fork and a really tight crown race, i didn't want to risk damaging the fork. managed to get to LBS before they closed - did it for nowt which was nice seeing as was evans and was expecting to be told to book it in for a mechanic and pay £50

I see yes carbons so fragile and easy to chip

sand the fork untill the crown race is a tight push fit...

I just discovered that a good tool to fit a crown race on a 1 1/8 fork is an extension tube from a hoover, like this

slip it over the steerer with the race between it and the fork, turn upside down and hit into the floor. Doesn't damage the race at all and goes on perfectly.

do not blame me if you break your hoover, but it worked for me

I would definitely break my hoover..
