  • 'Stupid light' has always been with us, there used to be Columbus tubes which bent if you looked at them in a funny way and Mavic GEL 280 rims weighed (surprisingly) 280g and were made of damp spaghetti. A mechanic friend of mine has told me there's been a recent spate of Cervelos breaking. Lighter is not always better.........

  • sadR repped for posting bikes that I can look at while others talk about UCI (whatever that is)

  • Waits for post completely failing to grasp Apollo's sarcasm

  • Fatigue and failure modus is, however, more complex and beyond the political means of a sport highly dependent upon bicycle vendor sponsorship.

But it is within the scope of EU consumer protection standards. If a bike passes EN 14781, it' seems arrogant of the UCI to ban it from competition based on some minimum weight limit they pulled out of their arses back in 2000.

I assume you are refering to "Starship".. I would not call it stupid light but just very light and ill-suited to anything larger than small frames..

and Mavic GEL 280 rims weighed (surprisingly) 280g and were made of damp spaghetti.

The 280s did not weigh 280g.. a bit more than 300g.. sometimes as much as 310-320g.. Where OK rims. A 36 spoke wheel front wheel will be fine. Its just not for lower spoke counts and rear wheels-- especially multi-geared rears beyond 126mm. Super Champion Medaille D Or was closer to the 280g and Fiamme Egal was lighter and stronger.. and the Scheeren Weltmeisters were even lighter.. 200g(!). A lot of people rode them on the track.. The whole point of rim strength is to be able to get enough tension into the spokes before they pull through. With current 9/10/11 speed road drivetrains one can still use these light rims up front.. in the rear one can grab a 360g class rim.. The old Mavic Piste rim was a favorite ..

  • this bike is for street riding, not track

Apologies, I failed to spot the brake.

    Because it's not there.

Because applying one would cause that fat touring tyre to hit the down tube.

because i used to ride on the street without brakes.

in practice pasela 700x23 is not as fat as you may be imagine and quite suitable for this frame.

  • I agree that no self financed racer world risk a frame of that value but it doesn't devalue the purpose of the product as a tour level race bike. I don't really have an issue with the high cost as it trickles down in time. The armchair critic or clairvoyant shop assistant seems to revel in judging the people who buy these frames as being misguided freds who never ride them. It all seems a bit odd to knock a pretty solid method of pushing technology and financing it through high value sales. The UCI limit won't last forever. Cervelo being bought by pon doesn't change that it is a relatively small manufacturing business where any high cost research has to be financially justified. Cycling is not F1.

I also don't agree that companies like Pinarello push the tech to the same level as say spesh bmc or cervelo as they tend to follow the rest of the industry. The UCI limit is not easily broken on a dogma as they are quite heavy for a top spec frame.

  • Lovely Humber

    Lovely. Needs all-black tyres though.

  • That Humber is decal porn

  • Want.

  • Lovely. Needs all-black tyres though.

If I ever change the tyres black will be fitted

  • is that the bike that was in one fpp shooter?

  • Fiamme Egal was lighter and stronger..

its ergal, but yes - but stronger only with 36h.

Don't post you own bike in bikeporn please.

  • The whole point of the anti weight-weenie comments was that if your bike falls apart before the finish due to underbuilt components, you lose!

Again, I don't think anyone was criticising the Cervelo, or anyone that rides ultralight expensive bikes, good luck to them! But, the emphasis is on 'rides' not 'buys' and to ride them, pedals help.....

I could see a lot of that Masi before I got annoyed, but for the sake of all that is holy, re-glue the rear tub, that valve is ready to rip out!

  • 1946 Humber Sports

    anti weight-weenie

    you can say that again

  • Don't post you own bike in bikeporn please.

My apologies, I never knew that. Can a mod please remove my pictures.

  • No. They can stay. Please.

  • Anti weight-weenie, well, you did ask!

Now that Humber is a proper bicycle, I remember when we used to ride 90 miles to the Wobbly Wheelers 10 Mile Time Trial and back before breakfast, now, let me tell you young man Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
