take a CX bike - i took my carbon racer last year and although quick on the roads was a nightmare on the bridal tracks, grave and cross field jaunts!! spent most of the ride squirting my water bottle into my brakes to remove constant mud and debris - great day out but did end up covered in shite!!!!
And looking at how the weather has been the last few weeks it will be muddy out there.
