    I think it is 2 speed... or that's what I have seen before. You keep a straight chainline by running it on the outside front and rear, or inside front and rear. Why? Well rather than running 40 with 16 and 18 on the back, say, with an 11% difference between the two, you can run 42 and 16 on the outside, 40 and 18 on the inside, giving a 15% difference.... and a straight chainline the whole time, and... the extra bonus, is you wouldn't need to move the wheel forwards and back... the required chain length would hardly change.
