  • Whilst I'm sure I've seen it mentioned before I can't seem to find the post now; as this is my first mechanical watch I'm not sure about the answer - is it ok to wear them whilst cycling or will the road buzz adversely affect the movement?

Should be ok in my opinion, though I'd be interested to hear others'.

I wear my Omega automatic on my bike for at least twenty miles a day. The big no-no is sudden impacts like dropping from a height on a hard surface (bathroom) as this can bend the hairspring (been there) or damage the balance wheel assembly.

  • Cycling is fine. My Seiko fell from the landing to the floor 12 feet below last year and has kept such good time since that I've only adjusted the date.

    Csb

  • Ok - thanks both.

  • should be no problem, been wearing the same watch for over 14 years.

  • Riding will give it a nice wind ;)

  • As will fapping...

    Obvs.

  • All depends on what you think she'll like. But more importantly, how deep your pockets are. I had exactly the same dilemma (first world problem) for my wife's birthday recently and got a good deal on a 90s 18k Datejust from a dealer exactly like your photo. Not exactly cheap but so nice and she loves it. Looks neat as a daily but can go with an evening dress and look gorgeous.

    Other options:
Oyster Perp / Datejust can look good on leather strap and much less painful price:

Excellent, thanks for that. Don't mind spending a bit on this as I know she'll really appreciate once it's on. The first Rolex you posted is a good option.

  • Yeah, spend some moneyz. Bitches love it when you spend some moneyz.

  • Crappy phone pic, but the toothpaste cleaned up most of the scratches.

  • Good work

  • Nice watch there.

  • Yup, crackerjack, nice one

  • Alsals cannot fix my watch :(

any suggestions for a repairer of a 30+yo seiko 6139?

  • Not really fussed as long it's similar or identical to the one I've shown above.

A possible candidate. I no longer know who's homaging who.

  • Evening folks. I have a question. I have sent my 19 year old Tag off for repair. It needed a new bezel. I have just had a letter back from the jewellers, who have sent it off to Tag, saying it needs a new bezel, new screen and a full service to make it good. They want to charge me £450 for this work!

    Does this seem reasonable?

  • What sort of Tag? Chronograph?

Other than whether or not the price is reasonable for the parts and work, you nee to consider how attached your are to the watch, I suppose.

  • I'm quite attached yes. It's not as fancy as a chronograph I don't think. Not sure on the model name or how much it's worth money wise, it was my 18th birthday present.

I just wanted to know if that was a typical price for such work?

  • Well, a strip down and service will often be £100 - £200, and spares prices often depend on supply. Rare spares can be incredibly expensive, even simple things like bracelet links.

I suppose your repair alternative could be to go to a watchmaker directly, and see if they can source a bezel, or buy a donor watch to give them.

I wouldn't go via a jewellers personally, as they are only going to mark up the price.

  • gridds, how much would a mint condition example cost?

Yes. That's about the going rate.

I used a firm called Swiss time services out in Essex which was recommended to me by the vintage Omega store in Burlington Arcade. That's about the going rate and it wouldn't surprise me if it went there from Tag.

  • Amazing bday present from the girlfriend. So so stoked.

  • Oof. I love the Chris Ward trident pros. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Lucky man.

On a different note, I took up Murts' advice and wandered over to my local clock/watch repair place - The Clock Gallery on South Ealing road. A good chat with the co-owner and I have a slot to get my Constellation serviced/repaired in May. They are otherwise too busy which I take a good sign.

  • ^^ I have one of those with the CW tridents with a charcoal bezel. Great value. Bracelet changing is a pain, so have opted for a bunch of NATO's instead.
