Ripple in downtube

  • Hello, fairly new on here and I'm looking for some advice please!

I've just received an Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra (Team Weinmann colours) that I won on ebay at the weekend. The seller highlighted that there were a few chips and scratches etc which is fine. However, on closer inspection there is a very minor ripple on the underside of the downtube about an inch or so behind the lug at the headtube end. It's only really visible when you catch it in the light and there's no paint damage whatsoever.

I understand that this is likely due to a head on crash and I've checked other areas. The top of the downtube shows no visable damage although you can feel a very, very slight distortion (barely there). The forks look original and I can't see any damage to them whatsoever, or on the headtube for that matter.

I'll try and post some photos later if I can show the damage.

Do I return the frame and ask for a refund or is it worth keeping? It's a lovely frame and much to my surprise I've been won over by the paint scheme so I think I may have developed an emotional attachment which could cloud my own judgement without good advice!

  • Return it.

Alternatively, have them pay for a new tube(s*) and paint job.

    • Other tubes may need replacing. So return it.
  • ^ ditto

unless you got it so cheap that tube replacement isn't an issue

    sorry man that sucks

  • As long as the wrapper is still sealed, I'd just eat it, even though it's mainly vegetable fat.

  • Personally, I would send it back, because it's not worth what I would've paid for it. Although steel's very forgiving, I'm not sure if I'd trust such thin-walled tubes.

  • BMMF repped, that made me laugh

  • ^^^ "You must spread..." etc etc

  • put a steel rule against it-if there's less than a mm distortion I would feel ok riding it, any more and I'd think twice about it. Either way do this and send a photo to the seller as proof that it's been crashed, he should be taking some money off.

  • Thanks, unfortunately that's what I was expecting to hear (return it). I now have the fun task of once again reigning in my German friend for translation assistance for negotiations with the seller. Gutted to be back on the hunt (56cm square if you're offering!)

  • Sod negotiations - File an ebay complaint, or you face being fucked over.

  • I wasn't going to negotiate as such more point out the damage and ask for a refund + shipping costs. Should I be filing a complaint before this?

  • Item not as described to a dangerous extent => compain.

  • Ok will sort later, thanks for the advice!

  • Take off the rose tinted spectacles and return it, by the sounds of it it's only fit for scrap.
