  • Yup
Lemme try now, don't know if the lights good enough.

  • Here's a pic of the main damage.

  • Umm....that don't look like the kinda shit JBweld be fixing.

  • It's not, it's really not but the JB weld is inside, that are of tube is filled with it to keep it solid enough to be rideable.

  • I really love this frame man. Specially that seat tube cluster.

  • Thanks and same, it's rare to have a frame that feels like it fits me.
This is why I'm keeping it forever and will get it repaired some day.

  • It'll polish out.

Thats what made me just lacquer the frame, no paint, so everyone could see what is going on there:

  • Speak to Ryan at Oak Cycles?

  • I've spoken to a few guys and I know it can be done just no cash at the moment.

  • Just thought how to take this..

    Next level franken.

Get a carbon repair kit and do a "reinforcing" carbon wrap bonded around it....

Funnily enough that occurred to me but with carbon being far stiffer than the steel I fear it'd just crack and come off as the steel flexes.

  • Carbon flexes plenty.

  • But JB weld being a type of epoxy and epoxy being what bonds CF my repair may crack anyway :/
I did cover the cracks with a self setting rubber to stop them rusting while allowing them to flex, I know paint would have sufficed but that's nowhere near as fun.

  • Carbon flexes plenty.

Enough to put up with this frame?
May give it a go then.

  • Well, I'm no expert, but look at "softtail" mountain bikes, with carbon stays designed to flex.

or my MTB, with a carbon rear triangle designed to flex.

Not sure what comes down to the layering and type of epoxy.. Can't hurt to give it a go and when will you have another chance to enhance a steel frame with crabonz? I like to experiment...

  • Well I have used something called 'flex-poxy' for a pair of shoes.
I know that carbon will absorb vibrations but wondering how it would do being bonded to steel in an are that flexes heavily.

It's worth a try though, might be a bit expensive though.

  • When I looked, carbon repair kits were less than £20... They included the layers, the epoxys and instructions.

Whether you think that is expensive or not I don't know. Expensive for an experiment perhaps. Learning how to repair carbon - priceless.

  • To be fair I hate spending money online, if I can find one in a shop for a decent price I'll have it.
I've done fibre glass before to repair snowboard top sheets and model plane cowling.

  • In my opinion your best bet is to get it repaired professionally.

The frames TM is on about have been calculated properly to allow for strength and flex with careful planning, not just "yeah, it should be fine!". Your weakest point of your frame should not be the hardest, could be pretty dangerous when it gives.

Indra, a certain frame builder owes me a favor or two after painting frames for them, want me to ask if he can sort this for a good price?

You want something like that I imagine. The shrink tape should give a good fix, as it will set the carbon tight.

That'd be great but after my current build I will have no money for that, would love to get it repaired eventually though, thanks so much for the offer James!
