yup, I'd say foam roller and clams should sort you out
-
• #728
Yeah, I've been meaning to buy a roller for ages and have just ordered one. Clams though? What's that?

I've got a lingering dull ache almost permanently on the inside of my left knee - Osteo had a look for me and said I over pronote/fallen arches/surrounding muscles not string enough/too much lateral play
Thing is I'm hardly cycling and it still bloody hurts - hurts just sitting about on my fat arse doing nothing! Hurts in bed.......hurts all the time
I saw my GP a year or so ago and asked for an MRI and he said (in not so many words) it's too expensive/do more exercise/do stretching/do yoga
fuck it - do I really have to go private to get it seen?

I used the search and could find nothing. I want to hear from people who have had to stop riding Fixed Gear for one reason or another.
It looks like me and Fixed gear is over. Finally got my melec build up, been doing my daily commute of 4 miles with it yesterday and my knees have ballooned up with fluid and a general burning. I could feel it last night I did use some ibuprofen cream to take the edge off. I'm riding a fairly slack gear 48/19
I do have some knee problems Chondromalacia and Patellar tendinitisTendinitis. Have been doing the foam roller work along with stretching and some strengthening exercises. To no avail :(
I've order a wheel build of a s2c to get some enjoyment out of the frame, as I don't see myself being able to ride fixed gear again. Gutted.
I'd be interested if anyone has any similar experiences

Before you do so, best to speak to someone who's experience in those field, like Scherrit of the Bike Whisperer.
48/19 isn't "slack", it's a fairly normal ratio.

Are knee issues thought to be a result of riding fixed specifically or just riding a singlespeed, which requires you to push a bigger gear than you otherwise might in some situations?
I'm interested as someone who's building their fisr FG/SS and has ongoing knee niggles.

And the first treatment for any tendonitis is generally rest? Let it recover properly, then see a professional to work out why it flared up in the first place!

Sounds like your positioning, fit and cleat set up are wrong. Brakes (2) would be useful as well. See The Bike Whisperer.

It's pretty fucking spinny, I'm on 47x19 for a similar reason...

48-19 spinner than 47-19?

Someone had a really interesting article on how how riding fixed can help people with knee problems.
I'll have a look. -

One thing that will never help is riding brakeless with a high GI.

Here it is.

i gave up riding fixed for a bit cos of knee probs, back on it now though 48x17 with seat adjustment, it was a small adjust but it worked even commuting 50 flat miles per week.
then again my weekends are all about century rides, big hills, gears, beers, so its good to have both worlds..

Bike fit for prevention, physio for treatment, brakes for life yo.
-
• #743
48x17 is hardly spinny.
-
• #744
Having two hand operated brakes make a massive difference.

It sounds as if you're doing something quite dramatically wrong, Jewsef. Get yourself checked out professionally. This thread is a good start:

Good luck.

Oh, you as well.

To be honest I gave up fixed gear because of my knees.
Since then my knees are sore no matter I ride.
Sports massage women reckon's I've torn a ligament. Absolutely no idea what to do now, dammed if I do dammed if I don't.
Can't believe at my age I'm in knee pain most days.
Stretching helps as does laying in bed and not putting any pressure on them.

It may be something else.
I had a period of knee pain a few years back and this is what I did after adjusting the adjustable.
Took a daily supplement of Glucosamine Sulphate which helped and I don't care if it was a placebo effect.
I looked at my diet. I find that big doses of red meat make my knees hurt. Sometimes tomato does the same. And sometimes aubergine. I think tiredness makes me susceptible to some foods with knock on pain in my knees.
Either way it's worth looking at other possible causes.
I've been having knee pain on rides over 50 or so miles recently. I can feel it coming on with a sense of increased fatigue in the muscle that runs from my right hip to knee and if I continue to ride pain starts to develop on the outside of my right knee.
Does this sound like IT band issues?
