I rode one in the late eighties, and thought it very good. I remember riding races next to people on them. If the rider was big and powerful, the frames would creak a little on hills. I have heard of them coming unglued, but never heard of them snapping.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy one now. I think the snapping story is yet another internet myth.
