Crabon disc wheel covet

Posted on
  • I can't afford a rear disc for my Vitus but want one. What's the deal with the £100 crabon covers you can get?

I'll admit my desire has more to do with sweet lookz than taking 30 seconds off my time for a 25 (PB is about 3 hours including a 25 minute picnic and getting lost twice) but I don't want to make the bike a pig to ride or have a cover come loose and kill me.

    Any experience amongst you lot?

  • I covet a cover.

  • Nice save ;)

  • Lots of people use them for racing, especially if they have a powertap hub built into a traditional wheel and want to use it in a TT. I've never used them myself but judging by their popularity i'd say they were safe. They are normally made of plastic not carbon, obviously make the bike heavier and more difficult in windy conditions. I think http://www.bike-science.com/ make them custom to fit your wheel.

Sorry i don't know much more about them.

  • ^ That's tempting, i've got a beat up ksyrium which i need to do something with...

  • Hmmm. I'm not convinced making one our of Depron is a great idea. But the fact that the covers are in regular competitive use means they can't be deathtraps, so thanks 'dan.

These look tempting at £110 made to measure : http://www.raltech.co.uk/Prod_3-Wh-Cov.html

  • There is no making one out of depron. You take a normal wheels, fill it with foam and then cover with depron for insulation and carbon film for looks. I made a front one a while back but I used the heavier yellow foam/

  • you would want your wheel to be pretty true before you filled it up i guess.

  • Yup the one I tried it on was a 32 spoke front, just because that's that I had lying around.

  • got any pics? how did it turn out?

  • None because it turned out shit due to me using the foam that starts out as a liquid, if I had spray foam I coulda done it properly but I really just wanted to test it out to see if it felt solid, it did and not toooo heavy but it was not balanced because the foam didn't set evenly.
I will be trying it again in a couple of weeks, I will definitely get pics of that.

  • I raced using Aero Jackets over my 808 last year. They're not as sexy but they are supposed to be more aerodynamic than discs.
