I'll give it a shot, thanks

  • TM, you saying that I should wrap up to the stem?

    I'm going for 'dis:

On some modern drops that are wet black. Planning on using nail varnish remover on the bar graphics first. Then, as I'm planning on using these for track only (and commuting to the track) was wondering if they would look good only taped on the drops and hooks.

  • do the ramps and drops, tops feel weird to grip on imo

  • Have you ridden track before Rob? I don't think many people spend all their time in the drops.... Only pro sprinters. You want the tops to be comfortable as well for training. I like bars wrapped to the stem, but was more showing that modern bars can look good fully taped. Also, in the event of a crash, you're less likely to ding your frame.... Those Cinelli drops on my Condor are great because they look dope but the tops are really comfortable as well due to the flat bits, almost as good as hoods.

  • I'm planning to give it a go this outdoor season. Just wanted to try out a different way of wrapping bars as I usually wrap to the stem. I also usually go for plain black tape too, but decided to jazz things up a bit with some (Mike) Giant on Giant action.

I used to ride my Plug with shallow drops and just track grips on. Didn't really feel any pain riding on the tops through town. I might see where the bars and TT make contact with each other before deciding how far to tape them.

I picked up some cheap BMC bars of ebay to try out as I didn't like how deep the Deda Pista bars were when I had them and my compact drops seem a bit shallow for track.

  • nothing special but i love the photo, nice n simple.

  • To pad or not to pad?

I was thinking or wrapping my tourer/commuter bars in padded tape (like this but an inch wide) http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/draught-exclusion-tape-2-pack/ before covering then in the leather tape. What could possibly go wrong?

What about using a couple of layers of innertube?

  • heavyyyyy

  • Just a heads up roboto, that Mike Giant tape is awesome but it is a bollock to get on without creasing, especially round any tight bends.

  • the suede style tape is like that, doesn't stretch very well, feels great though

  • I wrapped my compacts with rival shifters on my Alan using cotton tape and couldnt wrap around the doubletap levers at all, looks really messy >.<

  • What about using a couple of layers of innertube?

I assume the spongy tape stuff would be softer

(Sorry, I realise this more sex-in slippers than pron)

  • Will the foam compress and stay compressed though (eventually becoming firm), where innertube will never deform....

  • yeah if you ever have cork tape on for a year or so, gets about as padded as cloth tape, will do the same thing

  • Readers wifes, and most likely anti to the purists, or those with even the slightest amount of taste. Bikes are toys to me though. Never liked to take them too seriously.

I had some 2.5mm lizards skins tape in yellow in the parts bin, and had bought some 1.8mm in white. I was going to just use the white stuff, but had a brain fart.

Not finished. Only one side taped, and I want to add a 5mm strip of black electrical tape to finish the end. But I quite like the result. The fact that the tops are softer than the drops appeals to my bike OCDs too.

The 1.8mm stuff has a cooler design (IMHO), and the foam tapers off earlier across the tape, which makes for a flater finish. TBH I did'nt really expect to like it as much as the 2.5mm. But first impressions are that its better. we'll see.

    PS. Sorry.

  • Needs moar yllow hudz!

  • Needs moar yllow hudz!

Going to soak them. My black leather gloves have discoloured them a fair bit. I'd already swapped them out before the brain fart.

At the moment the white/yellow/black theme works better, visually, with the original hoods.

Fact is the hoods are quite a bit slimmer with the original covers. So I'll just use whichever fits better.

  • so i'll just use whichever fits better.

    dtm!

  • Down To Match?

I'd need to line up the join with the base/top of the hudz if I did that.

    Laziness > OCD

  • Having attempted my first harlequin wrap, the results of which certainly aren't worthy of this thread, the idea of wrapping them over gel pads gives me the heebie-jeebies. Good luck in what will be fiendishly difficult...

Bit late, but I think the more readers wives the better.

  • Can haz readers wife?
