  • My definition of racism involves all unnecessary mentioning of race. Maybe I am wrong, but I suspect I'm not. I suspect that I just care more about avoiding pointless, unnecessary racism. Sorry.

Besides - Phillip. To a British trekker in Papua New Guinea, 1998: “You managed not to get eaten then?” [source : http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/prince-philip-quotes-relive-65-1445185].

    is racist.

It's a naive attempt to be funny based on the fact that cannibalism had been practiced by some tribes in Papua New Guinea, it is still reported to be carried out by one tribe and arrests were made last year for engaging in cannibalism so in reality it is still relevant. If Phillip had stated that all people from Papua New Guinea were cannibals you could argue that he was making a racist statement however as a person's nationality does not define their race you'd also be wrong.

What gets reported in the press are little more than off the cuff remarks, it is difficult to understand someone's personality based on this. The press pick up on these remarks because people start to wet the bed about the Queen's racist husband and they sell papers/advertising nothing more. I don't like the guy, but to my mind he is he most likeable of a bad bunch as he is not some bland media clone designed to not offend anyone.
