Why not?

I like to get the specific parts for the job rather than just bodging something together that could possibly fail, not trying to put you down for doing this at all if thats what you're thinking chap.
-
• #5
Lol. I doubt its gonna fail. Have researched it pretty thoroughly. Cheers for the input though.

G Sport hubs have Aluminium axles with Steel helicoils through them. They are the strongest BMX hubs designed for street.

On a similar topic, reckon you could convert a 110mm bmx hub to fixed with lock ring threads?
-
• #18
I am unsure about the depth of the threads. I know you could get an Aluminium sprocket and Tac weld it on. I do not think there is enouch thread to add a lockring thread....

Interested to see how you do. Wish I knew how to do all this wizardry machining stuff
-
• #20
Yeah man. Cant wait to get this done. Just waiting for a 3/8 x 24 tap set then i will be away. Probably gonna "chop" the axle today ready.
-
• #21
Take some process videos?
I'm interested to see how your doing it -
• #22
I am no longer going through with this project. Made a swap for and All City Sheriff so all i am going to do is Helicoil the aluminium axle tstrengthen it more like a steel axle. Gonna tap a 3/8 x 24tpi helicoil in so that i can still use the G Sport bolts!
Will still keep yall posted.
Custom Hub Project
Hey guys,
I am going to covert a 14mm Unknown Bikes hub into a female using 3/8" BMX hub bolts and a lathe
So for a while now I have been looking for a decent rear fixed hub in black, suitable for my freestyle bike. I am running a Leader Mordecai so was tied down to a 10mm hub or grinding my slots (oo-er) to 14mm. I dont intend on running pegs so i thought i'd stick with 3/8" and not grind it all down.
I saw that Custom Riders already had the dregs of the UK stock of Resist hubs (only in white, i was gonna strip and polish them, a lot of work), but they fucked my order up so they quickly went out of the window as an option.
On the OneGear shop, in Switzerland, that they had some 14mm Unknown Bike Co rear double fixed hubs for a price that couldn't be sniffed at! I think I payed under £35 with postage!
It was then that I remembered that Kenny from Zodiac Engineering (check his shit, he does awesome bike and gun mods over in the USA) had chopped a load of 14mm axles down on Freecoasters, not quite down to the collars/cone nuts, leaving a small amount of 14mm axle sticking out so it still fits in the frame and then drilling them out and inserting female bolts!
I already have a front G Sport BMX Marmoset Hub for when i get around to building my new wheelset.
I have always been into G Sport stuff and have a set of them on my BMX. I also have a spare set of Odyssey/G-Sport BMX 3/8" (10mm) 17mm/6mm broached female bolts!
I am going to cut the axles down so that they are flush with the cones (this would make a hub useless!) then drilling and tapping the axle out to fit the 3/8 x 24 bolts. I dont run pegs either so I may invest in some G Sport Volcano bolts at some point, but at £10 a pair Im not really too fussed at the minute!
So be it that these aren't necessarily Custom hubs, it is gonna be a one of a kind axle setup with these bolts (potentially), and i hope this thread will help you guys to think outside the box when it comes to setting up the shit you want!
Will keep you posted on the progress...
