Benotto Pista

  • So,

I got my winter depression and therefore I gave myself a reason to spend too much money on bicycle parts that will make me happy again :-)

It's a Benotto Pista in my size (59cm) with a very bad paintjob, but with a nice geometry and no dents. It came with a mint Campagnolo Pista crankset (really, no scratch or scuffs) and some road parts (BB & Headset). Still had some parts laying around from my last winter depression which will suit this lady perfectly.

I was looking around on the interweb for information about Benotto's, but besides a few scans of brochures featuring a young Moser on the frontpage, there is not much information available. I think 90% of the questions asked about Benotto's on various fora, is about whether the particular bike is Italian or Mexican made.

I assume the frame is made out of Columbus SL tubing. The frame takes a 27 seat post, which is a bummer because 27's are much harder to find than 27.2's. All dropouts are Campagnolo. There is, besides the heart shape cutout, only one stamp (3-digits, 511) in the bottom bracket (as far as i can see). The frame is very light, lighter than my Gazelle Pista.

My plan is to make this Benotto pretty again. The previous owner did a horrible job with a rattlecan i suppose, so it is going to have a fresh new paintjob (no powder coat). But i can't figure out what the original color-options were. I know that famous Benotto bronze-champagne like color, but i also see quite some white and even some red ones.

If you can give me any more info on my new toy, i would be delighted!

  • Nice project, looking forward to seeing the results of this.

  • there's only one right colour and you know it.

  • also.
make a nice cup of tea and sit down on your couch with your arm around the frame and watch the impossible hour. it's well worth it.

  • ^Was just about to post that. Will have to do with second best:

    So nice.

  • supercool, down to the accent, voice and intonation of the narrator. thanks!

    i concur with the

there's only one right colour and you know it.

    full heartedly.

  • +1 for champagne. with chromed forks and blue benotto tape to match the decals, as per that thing up there with the old man touching himself over it.

  • Thanks for all the reply's! Much appreciated. I've enjoyed those movies, it's a beautiful bike with a great reputation. Makes me want to restore it even more!

To yank out most of the functional parts i've bought myself this nice set of tools:

I had no idea about reasonable prices for those tools, but according to ebay's 'buy it now' prices it gave me at least the idea of getting it for a bargain :-) There used quite little, maybe just a few times.

    And also some NOS decals:

So, i've stripped down the frame and asked for quotes at some paintshops. I've decided to make it the original bronze / champagne like color. It's not cheap, but since i got the frame for a good price i guess it's worth it. Dunno about chroming the fork yet, because it is quite expensive.

Anybody tips on how to protect the threads in the bottom bracket for the sandblasting? Or is it a unnecessary concern :-)

  • There are hundreds of great bikes on this forum but this one is gonna really be something special!

  • Also if that segment of The Impossible Hour doesnt make you want to get out and ride your bike nothing will! Ritter looks absolutely amazing on a bike!

  • be careful with the NOS decals. I bought 3 sets and the glue was all dried out so the decals would flake off. I had to have some reproductions made eventually.
maybe with clear coat over them they might stay on.

  • My NOS decals were fine... haven't taken my bike out of my house yet, but still...
Can't wait to watch this one progress!

  • Wayne has some 27 seatposts btw.. erm.. whats his bloody name on here again?

  • I hope the glue on the decals is still fine, we'll see.. They still look nice and are firmly attached to the paper.

2A stem is on it's way and i bought übernice (NOS) rims on ebay yesterday. I'm looking out for a fluted seatpost, too bad pedalpedlar didn't have anything.

Tomorrow the frame is going to be sandblasted!

  • Congratulations, great piece! Collection!

  • I've gathered quite some parts already now:

Because the frame it going to be resprayed, i want most of the parts to be NOS or in a mint state. That kind of sucks because it's all way over my budget :-)

Rims: Nisi Sludi 320 black anodized, with a very sexy Nisi badge as a counterweight to the valve (NOS).
Bars: Cinelli 67 (NOS) and 2A (used but in good condition)
Hubs: Campagnolo Pista (used, but a bit of polishing did the magic), front hub is missing in the picture.
Saddle: Unicanitor (NOS), no cinelli stamp on the backside, so i guess it's pre Cinelli.
Crank: Campagnolo Pista (mint) 165mm 151 bcd with a 50t chainring
    Headset: Campagnolo Pista (mint)
Bracket: Campagnolo, the one that came with the bike. It's says 70-SS on the axle, and is 2mm wider than a pista bracket.

Wishlist: pedals, pista bracket, spokes, fluted super record seatpost (27.0).

Still waiting for the frame to get it sandblasted, apparently they are very 'busy' and left the poor Benotto waiting in the corner the get rid of the radiatorpaint. My, more plausible, explanation is that they just forgot it. Arrggg....

  • nice projekt

  • really nice project, any updates?

also, if you're going for the completely restored look, just found this from the '76/'79 NY int. bike show, the two pistas flanking the roadie:

  • Thanks for that link sirbikealot! It going to be completely restored to its original color etc.. so basically like those in the picture. I've chosen for gunmetal grey anodized rims though.

Finally got the frame back and gave it a geometry check. I'm really happy with it, clearance on the frontwheel in increasing a bit more due to the headset.

Tomorrow i'm going to bring the frame to the paintshop. I've got a colorcode from somebody who restored a Benotto before so i hope next week or so i can start putting it all together again.

  • Small world....I made that small Benotto eagle decal on the above set. Sent a bunch to a good friend in France.

    Here are just a few.

Small world it is, the decals came from France indeed :)

  • ha, dizzibird??

  • Dizzibird is in the UK....
