The Lyon fans were superb all game, sat close to them in the west stand, and they sung their hearts out, producing much more atmosphere than the home support, who had come to be entertained, rather than produce the entertainment...
We played well, held possession, without ever really threatening, a couple of half chances, a couple of through balls to Adebayor who was caught offside, and looking neat and tidy.
The four mouthbreathers behind me who turned the game into lets 'ave it, as we sit and joke on the back of the bus, were getting crushed on the vodka they'd smuggled in and the weed they'd smoked before they got through the turnstiles.. Were telling Ade he was shit from the get go, even though he was given not much at all, hopeful balls into the air, and passes for him to chase and harry the opposition.
We didn't have any spark tonight, and we truly looked like we missed the inventiveness and guile of VDV and Modric, who though he didn't have many straight assists was usually the man who made the pass, before the pass, that lead to a goal.
Holtby when he came on, changed the dynamic, hustling, and chasing, all done with a smile on his face, and looking to get forward. Dempsey who he replaced, had worked, put in a shift, without you as so much knowing it.. Lennon was out of sorts, though had a run or two. Dembele holds the ball for a second too long, beat man, pass, should be his mantra, and in holding it too long he slows down the play just when we need to be upping the tempo on the break...
And despite my claims upthread about all teams to a certain extent being dependent on their superstars, we grow ever more reliant on Bale, or is it Bale is making us grow reliant on him. Two superb freekick goals, even though he too was quiet, apart from a couple of runs and darts into Lyon's area...
Definitely making a case for Spurs Player of the Season, and possible PL player of the season as well. So bound are we to his left foot. The place was a bounding cauldron of joy after he tucked away the second. Everyone was waiting for him to score and he duly did...
2-1 at home wasn't that bad, especially as Lyon scored a wonder goal from the man with TIT in his name, but hadn't looked threatening apart from a couple of Gomis darts, and long range shots or two. Lyon need to score one at their place and we're good on the break so I'm hopeful of us going through.
Holtby needs to start and soon, so that he can get off the mark scoring and we can have another threat aart from Bale...
Over the moon...
TL:DR
We played well, but not great. Bale showed he's the man. Holtby's a livewire and needs to start... Vodka and weed in drunken fans is not a good mix...
