  • Anyone?

  • Skully, AFAIK Isla will take back their bikes in PX for a new one. might be worth giving them a call

  • Will has got a Bein20, he loves it

  • Hi fruitbat, just saw that^.

Islabikes offer a pretty small amount, so I'd be better off selling / PX with another cyclist.

  • i agree ^, I am going to sell cisco's one soon. It is a cnoc 14

  • They fetch almost new prices on ebay.

  • I'm looking for a cnoc 14/16 for my nipper, so please drop me a PM (I can't send one yet as I'm too new ... too much lurking and not enough registering ;))

  • Hi
I have left you a visitor message on your member page. Let me know here or on my page if you're still interested.

  • They fetch almost new prices on ebay.

Wow, they do too, I just did a 'completed listings' search.

  • Those Islabikes are stupidly light.

Even the latest offering from the like of Specialized, Ridgeback etc. felt pretty heavy in comparison.

  • I've since picked up a Ridgeback MX14, which sprog is enthusiastically pedalling about, so I'll have to pass for now. Thanks though :)

  • My son, who is nearly 10, has outgrown his Ridgeback MX-16 - a simple, well-made single speed first bike. I took him to the LBS yesterday, and he rather fancied a BMX-style bike. I showed him the next stage up bikes from the M-16 all at around £200, but he said he didn't see any need for gears - he would prefer a single gear bike so there was less to go wrong, and so pound for pound he'd get better value components. I'm sympathetic to this view. Trouble is he's not really into BMX-style trick riding, and we're likely to go on rides as a family - maybe 10 or 20 miles, and I think he'll struggle on a BMX.

So - any other recommendations for single-speed bikes appropriate for 10-13 year olds?

  • OTP thread?

Some of the links are very out-of-date, but if you Google the same name and model, you'll get the latest prices and specs.

Oh yes, whats the budget, and how tall is he?

  • We have a winner.

    Nice one andy.w.

  • Budget is about £200.00.

Size - he's wee... umm... I'll measure him, but he's small for a 10 yr old.

OTP - sure - will take a look - but last time I checked it didn't have a child section...

  • Wow that looks great. Super find. Will definitely be giving them a call.

  • Looking for the next bike for my 6-yr old son, who's had an Islabikes CNOC 16 (brilliant) for the last couple of years but will soon outgrow it. Natural choice ought to be next size up of Islabike (Beinn 20), but that has derailleur gears which I don't think he needs. Can anyone recommend a good 20" single-speed bike that is light and has decent brakes? Ideally I guess I'm after a Beinn 20 with track ends...

Sorry for posting on what looks like quite an old thread. New round here. Hope someone's still reading this.

  • They no longer make these but may be worth looking out for a second hand on or give them a call.

  • Andy, many thanks. Saw your recommendation of this further up, and was gutted to find it's NLA. Will keep hoping to find a second hand one.

Meanwhile, all other ideas gratefully received!

  • getting good report s about these new suppliers

  • you could try some of the bmx racing forums, it's a new season about to start so lots of last seasons junior bikes being sold off......

  • I've just bought a Ridgeback MX16 off a forumenger. It seems like a nice bit of kit, quite well thought out (little brake levers etc.) and very tough, but dear god it's a beast! My luggage scales put it at 9.4kg, which is about 1kg lighter than my massive gaspipe fixie.

I don't think this will be a huge problem for the rider (my early days on a Raleigh Grifter didn't put me off cycling), but I will end up carrying it, so for the sake of my arms I'm trying to cheaply shed a few grams from it. My first step is to replace the steel seatpost and handlebar with alloy ones. After that I might look for some lighter tyres (16"/305mm) with less knobbles to keep rolling resistance down. Any further thoughts? Drillium?

For those of you who are about to write "buy an Islabike", don't bother. I may well next time once we start with longer rides.
