Polo Wheels (Tyres, Spokes & Rims)

Cool, I'm thinking more from the perspective of 'best' rather than will suffice. Is it worth going butted for reduced rotational weight or is it still considered a compromise too far in terms of strength for polo?

I'm using triple butted spokes, they seem to bend easier but if you don't mind using some corex then the wheel is as strong. I'm not sure how much corex adds to it so it may defeat the point.

Seems to come to the conclusion that PG spokes will make for a stronger wheel as a whole, but their fatigue life isn't as good as DB spokes.
While the extra strength of the wheel built with PG will be good in terms of crashes etc., maybe DB spokes are a better bet in terms of absorbing impacts from the ball?
Overall, it'll come back to how well the wheel is built in the first place, and how well it's maintained through its life.

Regular maintenance is the best way.

But if you can't be arsed with maintenance sapim strong are heavy but mean you never need to do anything!

As the gordo' not avaible anymore, is there any other 48 than chukkers?

I've been using a Rigida touring rim in my front wheel for about 6 months. Got it from SJS for crazy cheap - http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rigida-26-x-175-26-inch-559-atb-alloy-rim-48-hole-prod6739/
I can't work out why it's so cheap, eyleted box section, pinned (minor downside), a little narrow compared to most mtb rims but I'm using a 1.6" on mine and it's not excessively round. Not damaged mine in any way yet, which is good as I have a habit of beating up my front wheels

Why 48 hole?

36 should be enough for 26". I've hardly ever had a ball through mine.

They have a good unpainted braking surface, I forget the weight. I'm going to get another couple soon so I can weigh them then.

I saw big shot go trought 48, 26"... i don't want a 36. Also 12 spokes difference isn't a big deal with weight difference non?.
Last thing, im planning to hopping a lot with this bike, so i need really tought wheels.

I've had plenty shots go through my 48 spokes lately, I think it's the cold making the balls harder. I figured 36h/light covers would equate to a similar weight but better hub/rim choice and reduced chance of penetration even further. Hopping isn't an element I had factored in.

The clear covers that Jono and Luca used seem to work in stopping the ball. I think it was 0.5mm lexan or something like that. Flexible enough to fold iirc

clem thats about double the weight of my wheels. Your thighs must be trunks to be able to hop that shit.

Not had any problems with butted spokes, have had a few balls though my wheels recently though, either the cold or Mancs are all hard hitters now. I'd also recommend my halo freedom discs if your running disc brakes, reasonably light and mega strong, I rarely bother to look after my wheels and they stay pretty damn straight, going to true and tension properly for only the second time since getting them soon, must of had the wheels nearly 2 years now.

Talking of saving weight, for the Kojaks, use folding, not wired, they are a lot more expensive, but a hell of a lot lighter.

Folding 295g vs Wired 395g. Same for Durano, just different rubber compounds.

Hmm, well they are straight. The spokes are probably too tight but I wouldn't have thought that would results in the ball passing through. I'll have a look again! By lots of balls I mean maybe one a night if I am spending a lot of time in goals.

I've used lexan before, it sounds like you're trying to move a filing cabinate about but it's proper light/tough. Has anyone tried the HDPE covers fixcraft offer?

You'll definitely fit a 1.35" on there.

I think they're probably a lot less than 770g. Didn't feel that heavy when I built them.
