• I had a bike stolen in early November, the toerag got arrested and conveniently can't recall what he's done with my bike, it's been to court and is going to court again where he is expected to plead guilty as he's seen clearly on CCTV - he's bang to rights - off the record the police advised me I can claim some kind of compensation off him for my loss of my bike

How does this work please? I haven’t been involved in anything like this before

anyone get any advice had experience themselves of this?

    thanks all

  • I imagine if found guilty the court will instruct him to pay damages to you. He will have the option of paying it in installments so you're likely to get a cheque every now and then for like £12.

At least thats what happened when I received compensation for being assaulted.

  • ahh okay thanks for your advice, I wasnt assaulted - I just want the cost of my bike back... :/ - Ive had crap bikes ever since and mechanical issues as there cheap and nasty... the bike i had stolen was tuned too my idea of perfection and had forked out of brand new shimano front and rear brakes - it felt personal!! cie la vie

  • ^ had a similar experience to thedopestghost. Assaulted 6 years ago and still receiving the occasional random cheque(!) for £10. Even if you get awarded the full value of the bike, be prepared to receive it back over a loooong period of time, because chances are the perp doesn't have an income to speak of so will plead poverty and the court will just insist it comes out of their benefits gradually.

  • thanks for your comments :) - I hate these toerags, the fact it will prob come out of benefits anyway.... its all wrong...

  • Glad I have seen these thread as my bike was stolen by two young criminals of 14 years old who have now been placed on the Young Offenders Registry... The Police haven't given them a criminal record as apparently it is there first offence?? Complete crap! Anyway, could anyone advise me if the parents can be held responsible or forced to pay some compensation... The two young criminals conveniently can't remember what happened to the bicycle after they took it out of the library... If anyone can give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated... Abraço! cc
