from what I've seem general opinion seems to be that they're a bit shabby on the build/quality front
I'm not helping much, am I?

New one at $250 seems to counter the build-quality concerns, seems like a good review

^ twice the weight of the Series 3 also putting me off -

For browsing get a Nexus
-
• #8
Why not a tablet?
-

Chrome books have absolutely abysmal build quality and screens. They really are piles of shit. Just get a nexus 7...

Someone sort of the capitalisation in the title, really grinding my gears

I need confirmation on whether Netflix and Lovefilm work on it.
Heard they don't, which is a deal breaker for me. -
• #16
Not really bothered about Netflix and Love film. Just need a cheap note book browser which isn't a tablet.
I have ordered one which arrives tomorrow. I'll feedback after the weekend.

Coolio. Look forward to hearing about it.
I had one of these on my list but I already have ultra light laptop so maybe not worth it?

Comments from after someone else asked me about Chromebooks:
They're a good backup laptop for browsing the web, watching videos, forums, emails, etc. Nice and light, boot up almost instantly.
I already have an Android phone and a gmail account, etc so they play nicely with that.
They're not a replacement for a real laptop or PC though. They're mainly browser based so you can't install things like Sage or Itunes on there and, personally, I find the Google version of Office a bit crap (although others use it a lot and it would probably do if I wasn't so into Excel).
I'm happy with it as I already have a server at home that I have all my media on that I can connect to or I can access that if I need Office or something (either through Plex or remote desktop) but they're more like an iPad with a keyboard than a proper PC at the moment.
Build quality on them is pretty reasonable, you're not getting anything like an ipad display but it's perfectly usable and it has a very good keyboard.
HDMI out and a few usb ports is a bonus too for simplicity in use.
EDIT - and the bit I meant to post. Lovefilm definitely doesn't work (it uses Silverlight annoyingly). I don't think Netflix does at the moment although I thought I saw somewhere that there were some plans to introduce it.

All the above is exactly why I have bought one.

Fuck.. Eurosport player is Silverlight..
-

Well.. So far so good.. Nice build quality and a super keyboard. Boots in 7 seconds. Very light and very, very easy to use.
Apps are a bit funny as they are nothing more than a shortcut to a web page for that particular"app" but that's no big deal.
Screen is perfect for what I want to do with it.. To be honest there's not much more to feedback.. For £229 it's great. Not to say I might fine fault at a later date.. Will be doing a "soak" test over the weekend but i can't honestly see what might be at fault. It's just a natty little web browser..

So, I could populate Google Play with a stack of MP3s and play 'em from there?
What about iTunes - they don't keep a library of a user's music online anywhere do they? gf's got an ipod..
-

Google play/MP3. Yes. I think.
Itunes.. not sure.. This is one of the things I was intending to play with at the weekend but seeing as it's all on the PC I wasn't going to bother.
I have started using Spotify on it last night (haven't used it in years) just because of the fast boot time

I'm not bothered with iTunes but if I got gf one she'd be at a bit of a loss with regards to music. I showed her Spotify, Grooveshark and soundcloud last night but not sure she's convinced.

I forgot how good spotify was.. Loads of old albums I could never get on itunes and the themed radio stations are great.. The CB is perfect for it with a decent set of speaks plugged in.. As I say it is just a simple, easy to use, light web browser and as such that's what I'll be using it for..
Anything else (more complicated) I have the PC..
Looking at getting a new laptop, and in my incredibly brief search I discovered chromebooks.
Seem ideal to me, as I will still have my old lappy for HDD relating requirements, and a lightweight interweb machine for other jazz and taking to coffee shops with me.
I haven't actually used chrome before, so I thought I would ask the hivemind of an online cycling community their opinions on it.
Any specific apps/ plug ins that I should be aware of?
