Box Hill lap times + zig-zag split

  • I cannot find anything that covers this on the forum and there is something similar for Richmond. Moderators feel free to delete if in appropriate.

Went to do a 3lap session in Richmond today which was closed for a Duathlon so went on the longer cycle down to Box Hill, getting in a nice 80miles.

    So my fastest lap was:

    24"40' with a zig-zag time of 6"30' (G)

  • Both start at different points

The elevation for those two rides is really interesting, suppose it depends when you want to do the climbs...

  • Those seem to show a cycle from HighGat and seem to be the same around the Box Hill section

For clarification the split is from the T junction at the bottom of the hill up to the cafe

  • This is a lap as far as I am aware:

  • Ah I forgot they've altered the privacy setting on Strava now - if you're not following someone you won't be able to see the section of the ride I defined- ...va.com/rides/5180292#98672124 etc.

Yeah that's the lap I thought. My current best (from March) is 26:43 but I'm pretty sure I could get that well under 25 with the new road surface, feeling good on the day etc.

  • I did my first lap this weekend. 32:00 hope to bring this down.

  • Good effort for your first time! Once you're more used to the route you'll see a few minutes come off that, I'm sure. I think I started off at about 30:30, then after 4 or 5 rides out there down to 26:43.

    Enjoy :)

  • So you start from the dorking road corner and head towards Headly heath? Surely it makes sense to start from the bottom of the zig zag road?

  • I started from the Swiss Cottage Cafe cycled anti-clockwise.

New Years resolution of mine to get fitter / cycle on the weekends. Will be there on Saturday weather permitting.

Usually start at the junction of Headley Common Road and Leech Lane/Tot Hill and use the fast 2 mile descent to Old London Road as a steady warm up.

First couple of times I absolutely hammered it down there 29-30mph-ish average and barely had anything left for Zig-Zig. AND You lose all momentum at Old London Road on the sharp, gravelly turn left, and are suddenly faced with that mini climb over to the start of Zigzag. Caught me out a couple of times after smashing down Headley Lane. Brilliant fun though

Are you a south-westie? Going to be trying to get out there from wimbledon a couple of times a week (Chemo permitting) from next week. Probably aim to do wednesday afternoon and saturday early morning to try to get my fitness back!

  • Hi Rowhan,
I live is Streatham, I usually follow the A237 from Mitcham Common to Coulsdon. Then the B2032 (across the A217, across the M25) to Headley Common Road. Aim to do Saturday morning / midday, however I'm away this weekend. I'll PM you next week. Best of luck with the permitting.

  • Cool - think there 'might' be one or two others that could be interested in coming along on a weekend too. Cannot WAIT to get back on my bike at last - getting it back from Action Bikes this afternoon

Needs to warm up about 5c too to be honest, or I'll be forced to get my ugg-esgue overshoes out

  • I'm off to the peaks for some mountain biking this friday but would be up for a regular ride on a Saturday morning out from the Wimbledon area if others were interested? I know a pretty solid route out through Esher and over to Shere, Peaslake, Leith Hill, Box Hill and home. Its around a 55 mile loop.

  • Looking to ride the 100 miler prudential in August on my langster and was wondering of box hill was achievable on this single speed bike

    Cheers. Nick

  • You'll most likely die if you try it. Box Hill is epic!

  • You'll be fine, it isn't actually that long or steep.

  • @Nickkelly.. ask yourself 'do i really want to ride 100 miles on one gear, while everyone is overtaking me on geared bikes?'
If you haven't been out there yet, or covered at least 70 miles.. I'd reckon its pretty daft, but good luck.

  • Thanks for your feedback everyone. I've done 70 miles on a mountain bike ok . Is the gradient to the point where on a single speed you have to get off and push ? How many miles is it tone top?
