Been wondering myself about the right shoes for cycling. I just use some old running trainers at the moment.....

Nike Okwahn.
Other stiff soled approach shoes.
Unfortunately Okwahn II have just come out, and they totally fucked them up.

Sambas are a popular choice too, good shape for clips and straps and a nice grippy sole.

Chuck Taylor low-tops.

Adidas Gazelles or Samba's or usually Vans Era's, I had an old pair of Era's which I sprayed in some waterproof stuff and they were pretty good.

Birkenstocks. Not very good for mad skidz but stiff soled and well ventilated....

This should solve the skid problem. Super stiff soles and ventilation is great. I can skid for miles in these

Something to think about if buying shoes to ride in (with toeclips) -
I recently bought a pair of
and they are useless for riding in, the way the laces go at the bottom makes them stick up which catches on the toeclip and makes it very difficult to get my foot in the clip.
I also have these though
and the laces have a much lower profile at the bottom so getting into clips is a piece of cake.
The Nikes also have synthetic uppers (ie plastic) so are very sweaty and smelly but they do offer a bit extra protection against the wet.

Sorry.
I have some of the original Vans "Fixie" Era's I bought in 2008 still going strong. Suede toe, stiff sole, 3M reflective laces.
I find the Janoski's terrible for riding in. Too chunky/stiff. Usually stick to Vans or an old pair of Air Mariah's.
