I don't agree. This isn't the 70's. Everyone and their mother has tattoos and stuff now, so to most it doesn't hold the same 'significance' (haha) as it appeared to before. The more people get them, the more the stigma errodes, and so the more freedom we have. When people claim that it used to be different in the good old days and that you should 'earn' your tattoos it smacks of snobbishness to me.
A community building up a body of knowledgeand experience, with key people extracting lessons from that, is not snobbery. There are reasons to think twice about having your brand new boyfriend's name written on your face that have nothing to do with anti-tattoo prejudice.
