I used to commute putney to marble arch, I liked this:
wandsworth bridge, king's road all the way to sloane sq, go up sloane avenue, then turn right towards lowndes st (so you can cross straight into hyde park at the cycle-only junction by the big round hotel) and head up to marble arch. Mostly single lane, traffic isn't particularly fast and it's pretty much straight lines. Riding through the park is always nice

Thanks, might try this, but usually try and avoid king's road as always find it a bit stop/start.

I cannot recommend this lot highly enough: http://www.cyclestreets.net/
Great for finding your way to unfamilar places or even discovering a better commute. Gives you the option to select quiet routes, fastest route or mix etc. Streets ahead of TFL equivalent. Also available as iphone app. Sure it must be on Android too.

I'm soon going to be commuting from Southfields to Great Portland Street. Any suggestions on a cyclist friendly route?
Depends what you mean by cycle-friendly. Do you want quiet but stop-starty or open and fast but busy?
One possibility (in skeleton form) is:
York Rd (CS8)
Albert Bridge
Royal Hospital Rd
Pimlico Rd
Ebury St
South Eaton Pl
Lowndes St/Sq.
Into Hyde Park
Round the park and out onto Upper Brook St
Duke St
Wigmore St
(+ Wimpole St. and Weymouth St. of you're heading further North)That's kind of a mix of the fast and balanced routes suggested by cyclestreets.net, although I disagree with their classification to some extent. CS8 is fast, but next to loads of traffic. From Albert Bridge on it's small quite road and the Park, quite pleasant really.

Yes, CycleStreets is the best. Accept no substitutes.

Thanks all, I knew there'd be something like cyclestreets.net. Looks promising.
ffm - I quite like fast and open and don't mind the presence of lots of heavy traffic as long as it doesn't slow me down. I find roads like the Kings Road frustrating because there's lots of different types of traffic (cars, pedestrians, bikes), not all of it very attentive, and there's lots of junctions, traffic lights, crossings and road furniture. Doesn't feel so much like cycling as negotiating one long obstacle.

I rate Wandsworth Road as a reasonably fast and quiet artery for a big portion of this. I'd try and build a route round that, probably crossing at W'minster Bridge and going up Whitehall? I hate Whitehall though.

I use the CS8, but turn left at Lombard Road, follow that down to Westbridge Rd and then through Battersea park before re-joining the CS8 @ Albert Bridge.
You can cycle on the "Carriage Driveways" in the park, but they are not listed on the cyclestreet map.

Sounds good, but do you mean Chelsea Bridge?
