Old TT bike crankset question

Posted on
  • So i'm building an old TT frame back to its former glory ( i say building mainly scratching my head, cursing and watching youtube.)
The down tube only has one braze so i plan to run one chain ring at the front and a fairly forgiving 11-32 at the back.
I'm finding it difficult to find out much about what crankset to use.
Do i have to get a double and take the inner ring off, or can i use a track chain set? - My research suggests this may be fraught with alignment/ compatibility problems...

    Thanks

  • You can use either. It is the length of bottom bracket axle that will determine chain line. A track chainset may come with a 1/8" chainring which will be incompatible with a 3/32" geared setup, so you'll have to get a suitable 3/32" chainring. On the other hand, a road double with the inner ring removed and shorter chainring bolts will work just as well.

  • Dam, so no Sugino Zen chain ring for me! cheers yoav

  • Track cranks with 3/32" ring was the normal set up. Some old USWB TT frames need a longer than standard BB to make sure the spider clears the chainstay. Also gives a better chainline on the top 3 sprockets, which are the only ones you're supposed to use if you're racing :-)

Also, "former glory" doesn't include MTB gearing. HTFU and use a straight through block.

  • Ah, those were the days. To complete the look, you should also drill holes in every part possible, only tape the drops of the bars and use 24 spokes aluminium rims on large flange hubs.

It's what Alf Engers would have wanted.

  • Ok so my choice of casette leaves much to be desired and agree that it is hardly former glory terratory. I aim to get something abit truer to purpose but currently it's probably going to help me set faster times up those hills so pragmatic at least!
Shimano do a 3/32" dura ace chainring so I'm thinking Dura Ace crank to suit, but did every one just run Campag back then?

  • Depends on exactly what era, but in the 70s and early 80s Campag Record Pista was considered the top choice, although anything that was available could be found if you looked at all 120 bikes on the start line, including Shimano, Suntour, Stronglight, TA, Nervar, Zeus, and of course some people were still using their Chater-Lea & Williams cranks that they'd had since the 1950s.

  • We just used cheap double chainsets with shorter chainring bolts.
