Just to take one example, I can always spot an older bottling of Highland Park because of the hint of white spirit in the taste (there's probably a better way to describe it). I like it but it would put some people off. When the output of that distillery is used in a blend, that distinctive note will be masked by something else.
Sadly, in recent years the distillery has toned down even the single malt, going for something more easy-drinking.
