when I had my seatpost stuck I just fitted a really shitty saddle. screw it toight as fuyck,
then placed the saddle inbetween my staircase balustrade "eyelets" and twisted the whole frame.
worked.LOL! that's one way to go at it.

has this been removed yet?
I removed it this afternoon.
A couple of weeks ago I soaked it in coca-cola and wd40 for about 48 hours. It didn't move after that so i tightened everything up again and cycled with it for the last two weeks. Had another crack at it today and managed to twist the handlebars while holding the wheel with my knees, then it was fairly easy after that.

I have a stuck quill stem (alu into Steel) which moves if you rotate it left and right real hard, but I read that it's not good to do this. I have soaked it in penetrating oil for 3 days now and no joy :(
Then to my bigger problem, I have a carbon seat post stuck in a aluminium frame, any decent tips, as I have not really read any good advice online on how to solve this, other than to cut the bitch out?

where are you based?

I'm in Hertfordshire by Stanstead, but travel into London a lot to see the fam/kids/friends.

with these frames?
-
• #187
Heh, well I could do, they fit in the motor :)
-
• #188
if you want to bring both I could give it a go on tuesday, do you have a shitty saddle you wont regret losing and what is the stem clamp size?
-
• #189
I do indeed have a shitty saddle (what a moment that was) and I have no idea on the clamp size I'm afraid. I could go check it in the morning (it's in the cold and dark shed).
Where abouts are you based?

I am in angel N1, the reason I am asking about the clamp size is because it would be easier to use the bars in the stem, stick it somewhere so it doesnt move and use the whole frame/forks as leverage rather than just the stem
Anyway I am happy to give it a go, but you could do it yourself mind:) -
• #191
I'm confused about what you mean. do you mean turn the steering to full lock and use the leverage of the frame while locking the stem inplace?
-
• #192
yup!
(i think so) -
• #193
I could give that a go tomorrow and report back.
Cheers. -
• #194
(i would do the same with the saddle, so now when you know my magic technique you can as well try it out on both:))

• #195
Ohh nightmare, hopefully it will be sorted for you soon

I have a alloy quill stem stuck. I'd really like to get it out without cutting it off as its pantographed. I have tried various methods proposed on this forum and others but no luck. The only thing left to try is caustic soda to dissolve the stem (obviously this means goodbye stem) or i have seen some mavericks suggest sulphuric acid. My question to any chemists out there is will sulphuric acid damage the steel frame?
-
• #197
Have you already tried coke?
-
• #198
You're taking pretty high concentrations to dissolve a quill.
Don't drop it on the floor or anywhere.
Try taking it to your LBS, they'll be able to handle it without acid.
Pretty sure there are other ways, tried unscrewing the bolt nearly all the way an then wacking it with a hammer? -

watchouut that shit burns
-

Dont get the Acid, will be super dangerous and probably wont work.
There is a trick some old guy once showed me where you heat it up with a blow torch then apply loads of oil. As it cools it draws in the oil which will help it come loose.
(I think I have this right, was a long time ago)
