Aerospoke wheel - how to evolve

  • The Tifosi HHSB is now done and taken up commuting duties, so the next build has to be started.

I have a few options as a foundation for a build, but on one of my eBay searches, I happened upon an Aerospoke front wheel.

It is a bit beaten and would win no beauty contests, that's for sure.

Not sure how to evolve it from here. I have a proper beaten Claud Butler Urban 200 frame, which I am thinking throw this onto, and make an hood style rear disc wheel using corrugated plastic. Chop down some flats I have in the parts bin, then use it as the company bitch bike.

As this is still very much on the drawing board, it is subject to change without prior notice :)

  • First generation Spok = flexy as fuck. I know whereof I speak:

  • Sell it to me, that wheel was made to go on my Cougar track bike ;-)

  • That is an epic pic! the bike, the look, everything is Uber on that one. Thanks for adding it into my thread, now my thread is Uber :)

    Matt

  • How much did you pay for it off eBay ? No problem if you don't wanna tell

  • Tester, you resemble ed in your pic.

Ed, it's all down hill from here.

I think I paid a fair price, but have no idea what they are actually worth. Came with the tub too.

Hood rear wheel is just being 'decorated' by the kids. Will throw a couple of photos up once they have finished. Think for a first attempt it went quite well, but have a better idea of what to expect when I make the another.

  • If this is 650c you are obliged to build a lopro!
If it's 700c make it a bro pro, needs skinny steel tubes mind.

  • The tub says 26" so I am assuming that would make it a 650c. I would love a lopro, but I do not have any spare organs to sell to acquire one.

  • please make a rat with this wheel.. they just look damn cool!

i have a rear one of these - absolutely gorgeous. (better looking than the new ones IMO) it's going in my gf's fixed ride after switching the axle..

How old is Ed? I was about 25 when that was taken, there is much worse to come

  • Right bit of a pic update for the thread....

Picked this up of a chap in Eccles, paid him £20 for it. Came as a complete bike, minus a front tyre, which clearly the previous owner decided he did not need a tyre and rode round on the rim. Then judging by the state of it, parked it at the bottom of a canal for a few years. Anyway it was cheap, and I am sucker for saving these wretched push irons.

It has been in the cave awaiting some sort of plan to be hatched. The front forks were suspension 700c which weighed a tonne, not sure what to do with them.

For the purposes of the mock up, I have thrown on a spare set of forks from another frameset.

Then a quick You Tube video watch and the disc wheel was created. My daughters did one side, which took them an age, so I did the other side for ease.

I am thinking it is a bit too Frankenstein, but I will keep plugging at it for a bit longer, just to see if it starts to gel a bit more.

  • Matt, there are some lopros on eBay for under 200 at the moment, they're both track and would be worth a look, I'll find links now.

  • Like Lucy and Katie's (?) side, they win.

It's a 58ST not sure what you are but remember lopros come up a little differently.

Shit just realised that's not a lopro, fml.

  • Yeah Lucy and Katie would still be at it now if I didn't intervene. They want me to make them discs for their BMX's now.

Off to the velodrome on Sunday for a bike jumble, so we shall see what that throw's up. I have promised myself (and the wife) not to spend anymore money on bikes. So it will have to be a ninja outing.

    Matt

  • Excellent work so far - will it be geared or will you be filing the dropouts or doing magic gear

  • Cheers Rik, Just removed the seven speed freewheel and dropped on a 16t single speed freewheel. Not sure how it is gonna be geared finally, more than likely stay single speed freewheel. In that case plugged not thugged will be the call.

    Matt

  • titanium powder coat Matt..!!!!!!
    looking good on that frame
hope there isnt a lopro frame at the velo or your funds are gonna take a bashing

  • I ain't gonna do owt with the frame, other than de-sticker it. Ohh and knocking off any brazed on stuff, lol

Already got a guy on the look out for a lo-pro, when he comes across one I have first refusal on it :)

My wallet and my man bits are going to get a beating at the Velo tomorrow. Already got a guy meeting me there with a front wheel for the vintage build. So another thread for you lucky people will be coming soon.

    Have fun!

  • Right had a bit of a Thursday night play. Acquired a few parts this week. Thanks to Mr Rik Van Looy for a couple of kind donations.

I also cleared a back room at work, which turned out to be the old mechanics workshop, so it is dark, dirty and smells mouldy. Perfect!!!!! Whilst moving things about I managed to find a few more parts for the build.

The bars need a mahoosive chop but I cannot find my sword so they get to stay stupid long for this week at least.

I have a chain somewhere but cannot find it, so I cannot ride it yet, but it is not far off. Not sure the chain line is going to play ball as it looks a country mile out. But we shall see........

Pics to prove it all happened

    Matt

  • this is ridiculous/potentially incredible.

  • i love it especially the sword comment.... i may have a BB to help you out.. whats on there now ??

  • I have a donated one from RVL, the BB is not the issue, it is the rear freewheel. Might have to have a rummage round to get a better spaced rear.
