If it did flex, it'd snap! I don't think flexing in the cranks could ever balance out the dead-spot because they're attached to each other - if the cranks were flexible enough for this to happen, any energy would just make the opposite crank flex... hmmm... needs some close analysis that I don't have time to do. Interesting thoughts though.
