Fork milling and consequent worry

  • ok i recently got some cheap carbon forks, but it turned out they were 1,1/8" to 1, 1/4". i have a straight through 1,1/8" setup. so i sanded about 1/16" off the bottom to make them fit. it appears that to make them up to a larger diameter the manufacturer had added more carbon to an existing 1, 1/8" tube. so basically i removed this (i hope!).

anyhow, i have fitted them and they now work fine. but i am a bit anxious about them. i have had them in a vice and put a lot of weight on the steerer without a problem.

    should i trust them?

  • Well, that's quite a substantial amount of material you've removed there. The thing is, carbon aint like metals where you can remove say half of it, and expect it to then be half as strong. Its made of fibres and glue.

So the fact that you've removed that material might mean the carbon is now completely fucked. However it could also be completely fine depending on how its constructed.

So in conclusion, I have no idea. But for the sake of a couple hundred quid, I would just get another.

  • ok i recently got some cheap carbon forks, but I might have dentist bill for several times the cost of the forks soon.

    FTFY.

Should sold the fork on and purchased the correct one.

  • File it down more until it breaks, then use the broken section to beat yourself around the head and face with. Once you are satisfied with the result, try to get some forks that fit and be happy you are probably in less pain than you could have been.

  • Only with forward momentum.

    And on rough tarmac.

    Niiice.
