Campagnolo Victory Rear Derailleur problems...

Posted on
  • Hello all...

I've finally got round to giving my Gazelle road bike a bit of a going over ready for the summer (much overdue) I've stripped pretty much everything and getting round to replacing the parts that are a bit spent.

I've come to the rear derailleur, a Campag Victory number like this one.

I've taken it apart, cleaned it all up and put it back together again. The problem I've got is the spring that controls the jockey wheel position.

The only reason I've not gone out and found a replacement is that the spring appears to be drawing the jockey wheels the opposite direction, towards the front of the bike meaning the chain, when looped through is not in tension at all and in effect the derailleur appears redundant.

I was hoping that someone could tell me if I've been a total weapon and put it back together wrongly or if indeed it sounds like the spring is fucked and probably needs a partial/full replacement....

Thanks in advance. Here are a couple of images if my beautiful description (!) alone isn't as clear as mud.

  • Looks like you've attached the cage wrongly. It should be fitted such that the spring is pre-loaded.

(I have one of these mechs for spares if you ever need bits).

  • take the cage bit off, there is a spring inside the bottom of the mech. there is also a corresponding hole on the cage. keep turning the cage until the spring pops into the hole and there is resistance when it is in normal position - i.e. the spring wants to push the cage .

  • Thanks for that guys, sounds like it makes sense, will give it another fettle when I'm back at home.... Cheers Rodabod for the offer of spares....
