  • you can put 35mm cross tyres on a road rims.

Well yeah, but I was thinking of keeping within the suggested guidlines re rim width and tyre width - what is it, about 1.5 to 2 x. So a 14mm road rim would only go as far as 28mm... which is not far enough.

Having said that I have a 29er with big fat Halo Twin Rails on some fairly skinny rims. I am sure that exceeds all sensible guidelines.

And you can put singlespeed cogs on a freehub. For example 99pound A57 wheelset from planet-x seems like quite decent deal for cx.

Well sure. But I would rather not have the wheel dished for a ten-speed if I only need to run one or two cogs. Do they do any freehubs with a little less cassette width thingy?

Just checking the A57s now - yeah, lovely, and a damn fine price too. But still dished to fuck for the wide spliney bit (what is that called?). But could be a goer.
