Just a note of caution if you're using a carbon seatpost. I put and SQR on a 27.2 seatpost and the screws are long enough to scratch the post when they're tightened. Could be more serious if this happens on carbon.

How exactly do they screw in then?

Shorten the screws and or add tape/ inner tube around seat post to protect seat post.

That's what I read, I've never seen the actual mount though so was unsure of how the screws would be digging into the seatpost

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carradice-sqr-quick-release-mounting-block-for-sqr-saddlebag-uplift-prod2840/?src=froogle
they work kind of like how brake hoods attach to drop bars. so the screw tightens by pulling in the metal bands and in doing this the end of the screws move towards the post. .. if that makes any sense ... -

Ah gotcha, bit of inner tube should sort that then

Inner tube is necessary, to get a good non-rotating fit without overtightening the clamps, but will get cut through by clamps and bolt head over time. Inner tube has been cut right through on two of my installations. So still wouldn't use this solution on a carbon post.

My gf and I were touring around the South of France last year in the summer. I got one of these for her bike as it had no mounts but instead of using the weird bottom adjuster thing I just mounted the rack directly into the quick release. Worked a charm as they supply you with an extra long skewer and spacers so the rack wont hit the gears.
Granted it was bodged but it was strong and only slipped once or twice. We were out for two weeks and were camping so we had a fair amount of stuff.
She now commutes 15 miles each way using the same skewer mounted rack holding loads of shit and it's still fine.
Check the touring/touring equipment threads few pages back.
There's an option of seatstays mounted clips, rear brake bridge mounted, with a seatpost clamp etc.

Only just.
Yeah think I'll get meself an SQR, or possibly borrow one as I'd only be doing something like this once in a blue moon
