The saga of my mother's computer needs continues.
She's unable to get along with tablets, so a laptop with keyboard it is then.
Been looking at a couple in the sales, but they are all much of a muchness.
So recommendations, looking for something for internet use, odd bit of word processing, emailing, and probably skype in the future.
Not looking to spend over £350 ideally, running Windows 8, Intel i3/5 processor, longish battery life.
Was thinking Lenovo IdeaPad S400
Asus X501a or Acer S3-391 (which was on offer at £399 somewhere)Any thoughts?!?

Chromebook?

thought about it, but she's getting her head round windows, and not sure she'd adapt, but am keeping it in mind

Chromebook, too early in its infancy. Cloud computing isn't there yet to buy a chromebook IMO.

I disagree.
I mean... my mother only does browser, she's crap at everything else, she can barely learn Windows, OSX and I even tried Ubuntu on here.
The Chromebook is the only thing she's got on with.
All she really knows how to do is browse the web, use webmail, use Google Docs for the odd document or spreadsheet (less than 1% of use is this). And she stores no files at all as far as I can tell. I gave her Dropbox over a year ago (pre-Chromebook) and when I was checking how she was doing she had zero files in there, and none in her My Documents... mind-blowing.
For some people, the Chromebook is everything that they need. And as they're at home and using WiFi, it's just a no-brainer... that's before you factor in the price point.

I was looking on Amazon and the new Chromebook has very good reviews. If you don't need software or play games, it seems that device would be ideal for you.
7 sec start up, and it appears to be virus free.

Chromebooks are pretty nice for web browsing, brief documents, etc but for me personally my Chromebook couldn't replace my proper PC, it's more like a tablet with a keyboard in what you'd use it for.
Bear in mind that there's no Skype for it at the moment either.

Did it to the desktop, shouldn't be too hard. Pretty much plug'n'play...
I love SDD boot times... ^_^

Does this laptop exist?
- £500-700
- 15.6" 1920x1080 screen
- i5 or equivalent processor
- Mid range AMD dedicated graphics (I got stung by the nVidia chip failures a few years ago so swore off them for at least one generation)
- Windows 7
Thoughts?
- £500-700

I have a Dell Latitude E6420 - it's the 14" laptop one with a magnesium chassis.
Specs are:
- Intel Core i5-2520M @ 2.5GHz
- 4 Gig of RAM
- Windows 7 Pro
- All the usual gubbins
- Backlit keyboard (and I have the original non-backlit one as well)
The laptop is in great condition, what would be a fair price for it?
- Intel Core i5-2520M @ 2.5GHz

Would £250 be in the right ballpark, or way off?
-
• #540
Ebay says that's a more than fair price, you could probably add another £25.

Cheers.

I posted in AQA then spotted this thread so apologies for the double post.
What should I be looking for in particular in a £3-400 laptop? Won't need to do anything much more strenuous than SketchUp.
