Best spraypaint?

• Well, as titile says, what's the best spraypaint for re-spray and where is best place to get it (ea. anywhere you dont have to pay halfords prices)?

I know there's alot of art and hiphop shops, but art shops are well expensive and I'm not too sure graffiti paint is the best thing to use for bikes..

• If you're going to keep it then get a decent paint job done. Alternatively, if you're going to chop and change them every so often then have a mooch over to Armourtex in Hackney who'll powdercoat it in a variety of colours for not ridiculous money.

• spray can paint will be shit on a bike frame, you need proper spray kit to do it well. Do as b&d says.

• if u want to paint yourself, graffiti paint is the highest quality spraypaint u can get.

• Normal spray paint from a miriad of sources, I quite like the enamel paint, (from wilkinson as its cheap) but its good prep work that is the key.

• but its good prep work that is the *key*.

Nice intentional pun?

In any case what lynx says is right. Good prep, sand, clean, primer then another light sand with fine wet & dry ( for a good key ) and lots of light coats. The first coat should be translucent and still be able to see plenty of primer. Build it up slowly. then put a clear over the top.

You can get OK results. I have done many repairs to car panels like this and they always lasted well enough.

• I would go for Molotow Belton's or Montana. High quality paint.

• The best paint? If you want to do a rattle can job, it has to be Plasti-Kote. They sell them at B&Q. I sprayed my bike in 'pewter' and added the metallic (sealer) lacquer. Doesn't run too easy once you get the hang of it. You'll need a can of primer, can of top coat and if using metallic, a can of 'sealer'.

It should go without saying that the end result will only be as good as your preparation and careful spraying.

Except for the fact that it's specifically formulated for spraying on walls, not metal bikes.

• Stripping a bike frame down to bare metal by hand is basically hell. Spraying it by hand at home then seeing all the dust etc. settle is even worse.
Take it to a powder coaters. They sand blast it. It's easy and cheap. And you get a result.
Or for an economy bodge job, use Hammerite.

• belton or montana or any other graffiti paint are shit, try to get old paint like multona or other carpaint brands, there is real paint in those cans that will last a lot longer. Best way to protect the paint is using a two-component laquer (they come in cans, you have to push some sort of valve on the bottom of the can to mix the two components)

still easier just to go to armourtex

• excuse the necropost, but i sell "graffiti paint". if any of you need some ill do you a 10% discount as well. Loadsa colours! http://www.writersbench.co.uk/spray-paint/molotow-premium-belton.aspx

• What about painting by hand? Apart from brush hairs and smears, it must surely be worth considering?

• it's all well and good suggesting powder coating and proper spray kits, but in fact a spray can from a motor factors is perfect.
It's the prep work and conditions you spray in that are way more important than the equipment, the viscosity of most canned paints smoothes itself out to a perfect finish anyway so cheap car paint will def give you a perfect finish if you dont spray it like a div!

i just finished a respray on my bike and its perfect, PM me if you want some advice and i'll tell you step by step how I did it!

Yep. I briefly worked as a painter's assistant and he said the same thing. You can blow the paint out of a bicycle pump and get a professional finish so long as you prep correctly and do a hell of a lot of wetsanding. I have even painted a bike with a roller and it was better than a lot of factory jobs.

Rattle cans will never be as durable as 2-pack acrylic, powdercoat or stove-enamel, though.
