Where did this assumption come from that riding fixed (especially uphill as stated somewhere on the previous page) puts extra strain on a rim??

not rim, they were talking about the hubs I think, which is true if you're riding a disk wheel brakeless. glueing carbon to metal is not as strong as 36 spokes.
