Cheers villa-ru. Just to add to the confusion, I'm sure I read somewhere that "mandatory" in this context means that motorists cannot go in them, rather than that cyclists must go in them. That could well have been duff information though and I'd be happy to hear a definitive answer.

Nope, apparently that is correct. "Mandatory" is a restriction on cars, not bikes.
